Game #59 with the familiar Skittles’ tarp; Max Scherzer lurking!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

Another day at Nationals Park with the Skittles tarp on the field. When the game will start is very much an unknown at this point. After a very late night for the Washington Nationals traveling back from the Tampa area, it might be nice for the players to relax a little bit longer since the Nats did not get into their DC homes until well after 4 am.

Both the Giants and Nats had 11-inning games last night, but the Giants lost and had an early game in Texas and arrived at Dulles Airport nearly 5 hours earlier than the team that calls Washington, D.C. their home. How many times have we seen teams schedule night games on getaway days? The funny part was Ryan Zimmerman thought today’s game was a 1 pm game, and he was none too happy about that. Zim’s must have read the schedule incorrectly or was looking at Hawaiian time. Continue reading

Nats win a thriller in 11 innings with big power from #11

With two home runs from Ryan Zimmerman, and one bomb from Juan Soto, the Washington Nationals were able to win it with some small ball in 11 innings. The final score was a 9-7 win in Tampa, and a split of this two-game series. The Nats had a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and then starter Patrick Corbin began his evening by issue three consecutive walks, and finished the inning with his team behind 3-2. Corbin would not let another run score in his 5.0 innings of work, but that also taxed the back of the bullpen that was tasked to hold a 5-3 lead, and that lead was courtesy of Zim who added his two home runs to get it to a 5-3 game. But Kyle Finnegan and Daniel Hudson gave up solo home runs to push the game to extra innings. The Nats bent but didn’t break. Continue reading

Game #58 Will the Nats show up to play today?

Photo by Marc Goldstein for TalkNats

We hear the excuses after each tough loss that the players are pressing, but nothing is changing. Last night’s failures in key hitting spots had little to do with BABIP. Only Trea Turner and Josh Harrison came through in RISP spots, and the rest, well, Juan Soto hit into a doubleplay with men on second and first base — but he at least put the ball in play. That is better than we can say about the bases loaded failures in the 8th inning when Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Bell both struck out to put zero runs on the board. Continue reading

Game #57 The Rays ace against the Jon Lester’s opportunity in Tampa!

Photo by Bryn Goldstein for TalkNats

The reigning A.L. champions, Tampa Bay Rays, host the Washington Nationals in a mismatch on paper. Tampa is surging and the Nats are purging. We just never know which Nationals team will show up from one game to the next. It is tough for Nats fans to ride the lows of the season, and here we are back here hoping the Nats can get an underdog win. Continue reading

A Nats’ team with little margin for error, and a team that doesn’t handle adversity well.

This 2021 Washington Nationals team lacks depth and has no come-from-behind wins this season after the 6th inning. On Friday night, the team had one of their signature wins of the season, and it felt like they could achieve some momentum going into yesterday’s game. They were cruising on Saturday until a simple groundball was booted by Josh Bell in the 4th inning of that game and that led to four unearned runs. Joe Ross fell apart as we have seen too often. Errors happen. Mistakes happen. The Nats were winning 1-0 and lost 5-2 in that game. Sunday’s game took a similar turn. In that game, it was a tougher play on a shallow popup in leftfield that clanked off of Jordy Mercer‘s glove leading to another four unearned runs.  Continue reading

Game #56 The Nats have a series to win and they are the big underdog in this one!

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

This time the Washington Nationals had plenty of reasons for the mystery surrounding their starting pitcher today after Stephen Strasburg was pulled from the starting rotation with a neck/trapezius injury just five days ago. The spot starter candidates were few with only LHP Ben Braymer on the 40-man roster, and then there was Tim Cate in Double-A and No. 1 prospect Cade Cavalli just 30 minutes away in Wilmington, Delaware at the team’s High-A affiliate who have arguably been the two best pitchers in the system and they lined up perfectly for today. In the end, the stars aligned based on usage that Austin Voth was stretched out enough after pitching 3-innings and 50 pitches in that Strasburg game, and on top of that, spot starter, Paolo Espino, is fresh. Game #55 Joe Ross has to come through for the Nats!

After one of the best wins of the Washington Nationals season, this team has to show that they can do it again and again. Consistency of winning has not always been part of the Nats season, and they have to show the baseball media that they are not in sell-mode. In fact, the Nats were the only NL East team that won last night, and they moved into sole possession of fourth place. Continue reading

Twenty-one* to Watch in 21 (*the forensicane list)

Seijas photo by Clint Often for TalkNats

The calendar has turned to June, and with that, an adequate opportunity to study what we have in the minor league inventory. As you know from my previous columns, I dispense with the prospect rankings and their click-baiting that tell me to get overheated for Carter Kieboom while ignoring the staying power of Yadiel Hernandez; fixate on drafted talents while overlooking the fruits plucked from elsewhere like Sam Clay and Kyle Finnegan; drool in direct proportion to the bonus a young player receives while ignoring a player rising through the system who is lights out.
