November 11th: Ryan Zimmerman Day

Today is what I declare to be “Ryan Zimmerman Day” on 11/11. Employee No. 11.

Now, of course, there are dozens of different days that could be called this. How about September 28th, his birthday? Or June 18th, the day of his first walk-off home run? Or maybe October 22nd, the day he hit the franchise’s first World Series home run? There are countless days I could declare Ryan Zimmerman day to be, but I’ll choose November 11th, 11/11. Partially because I like his number choice, and partially because this may be the last time we can celebrate before that #11 is never worn again. Continue reading

Nats news & notes | Coaching staff finalized; FP DFA’d from MASN; 160 baseball players are unemployed

The day after the World Series always goes from those highs and lows of the final game of the season to the reality that free agency becomes official. A total of 160 free agents officially hit the market and are now technically unemployed. The help wanted signs at Nats Park were removed as the Washington Nationals filled all of the vacancies on their  2022 coaching staff with a name nobody had on their list: Ricky Bones.

Surprise surprise and welcome to the official first day of the off-season as the Hot Stove is simmering. Not much will happen on the Hot Stove as we are a month from the CBA expiring, and teams just will not make any major moves before then. This could be a very long off-season. Continue reading

Super agent Scott Boras has a birthday today and is 69!

Like him or not, there has never been a sports agent who has transcended the modern game more than Scott Boras. Now a new collective bargaining agreement is being negotiated in Major League Baseball, and you would expect Boras will have a lot to say about that, both publicly and privately.

At one time on the Washington Nationals roster, he represented 60 percent of the starting pitchers with Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, and Gio Gonzalez who switched to him as his agent. Boras represented 100 percent of the Nats starting outfield at one time with Jayson Werth, Michael Taylor, and Bryce Harper along with backup Brian Goodwin who was another of the Nats former first round picks. On the infield, he had 50 percent of the players from that 2016 team with Anthony Rendon and Danny Espinosa. If one player left, it seemed like another moved in like catcher Matt Wieters. And don’t forget this fact,  Boras represents their greatest player in Juan Soto. Continue reading

We start with some leaked news from Eric Young Sr. that his son Eric Young Jr. will be the Washington Nationals new first base coach. The next bit of news is about the Nats in the Arizona Fall League had some nice showings today, and the youngest of the Nats, were rated by Baseball America today with 18 year old Brady House ranked as the best power hitter in the Nats minor league system. From Young to the youngest Nats top prospect, we actually had some new news to discuss today. Continue reading

The G.O.A.T. aka Juan Soto turned 23 today! Happy Birthday!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The 2021 season opened bittersweet for the Washington Nationals. They won on a walk-off hit by Juan Soto on the rescheduled Opening Day. It was the first walk-off of Soto’s career as the team beat the Atlanta Braves. Covid had ravaged the Nats projected lineup to start the season. Of the nine players in that lineup, only three would finish the season with the team. Soto was one of them of course. Continue reading

What’s next this offseason for the #Nats?

Erick Fedde watches one fly during a June 2021 game against the Atlanta Braves.

As we all “enjoy” another “thrilling” MLB postseason, the Washington Nationals are getting ready for what will be the most unusual offseason they have had in quite some time.

Nats management has been careful about the “r-word”. No one wants to definitively say the Nats are a rebuilding team, with general manager Mike Rizzo preferring to say this is a reboot. No matter how you slice it, the Nats were really bad in 2021, not much better in 2020, and don’t look like they have a lot of help on its way from one of baseball’s lowest-rated minor league systems.

On the flip side, payroll is way down, so is the roster’s median age, and the Nats have a lot of control over what their 2022 Opening Day roster looks like. They have few pending free agents and a number of players “on the bubble” who might or might not suit up for the team next year. Much of this is up to Nats management.
