The Washington Nationals will go into the second half of this season with a losing record and last place in the NL East. Their record at the end of the game will either be 30-51 or 29-52, and that puts the team on a pace of 60-102 or 58-104 for the full season. Both are horrible, but both should help the Nats secure another top draft pick next year to add to the farm system.

The MLB draft is in just 15 days, and as new draftees get added to the system, the current farmhands want to prove themselves. Former 2018 first round pick, Mason Denaburg, was on the mound for Fredericksburg, and after some rainouts of the DSL and FCL, they were back at it. We are nearing the mathematical mid-point of the season this weekend after Sunday’s game, and the Washington Nationals are now hovering at that 20-games under .500 mark on the season. The baseball world, on a quiet day, got a jolt when Hector Gomez tweeted that there were additional negotiations and a new offer for Juan Soto. After the offer of $350 million over 13 years was made over the winter and rejected, the Nats made an offer of $425 million per Gomez.

They say that momentum is only as good as your next game’s pitcher, and here we are with Paolo Espino who pitched well enough to beat the Phillies until a bullpen implosion, and again last time out against the Rangers. The issue with Espino is going deep into games. He actually pitched into the sixth inning over the weekend in Texas going 5 1/3 of one run baseball.
Since Espino’s doubleheader start against Philadephia on June 17, the Nats starters have a 1.82 ERA and that includes two turns through the order for the current rotation of Espino, Josiah Gray, Jackson Tetreault, Erick Fedde, and last night’s hero, Patrick Corbin. Continue reading

He was selected in the 7th round of the 2017 draft, and was never a highly regarded prospect in the Nats’ system and was never a consideration to pitch for the Nats until recently as he was probably tenth on the depth chart — yet here he is. The statistics say that Patrick Corbin has been victimized the most by the defense behind him, and tonight, manager Dave Martinez is putting in the best defense he has, and to be honest, besides Victor Robles in centerfield, that is not a great defense. Yes, Lane Thomas in leftfield, and Alcides Escobar replacing Luis Garcia, are upgrades on paper. The last time that Escobar started a game for the Washington Nationals was last month on May 31. Sans Patrick Corbin, this Washington Nationals rotation on this 8-day stretch are looking like they found a path that works. In two starts, Jackson Tetreault has one earnie on his record, and that was from an inherited runner who scored. Also in two starts, Josiah Gray has only allowed two earned runs. Erick Fedde, tonight’s starter, is trying to best both of them as he adds to his scoreless streak of 7 2/3 innings going into this game. In all and including Corbin, this rotation has a 1.52 ERA in this span. Continue reading

We’ve also reduced the comment refresh delay from about 30 seconds to 10 seconds, making it much closer to real-time.
