Drew Storen – The Good, the Bad & the incredibly Ugly

One of the recurring issues that comes up on many of our discussions is the bullpen, and specifically Papelbon and Storen.  There are lots of opinions about both of them.

As both a fan (and fans, by definition, are not necessarily objective) and as someone who has spent his career dealing with data, I thought it would be interesting to list the details of each of Storen’s appearances since he was demoted to the 8th inning. So here is a game by game recap from the Game Day data. Continue reading

Priorities, priorities. What are the #Nats off-season priorities?

We all have an idea of the Nats off-season needs; however, do we know the true priorities from top to bottom?  Are Dusty Baker’s priorities the same as Mike Rizzo’s?

While Dusty Baker was out pheasant hunting, Mike Rizzo was out MiLB hunting making some signings like Logan Schafer, Chris Heisey and Sean Burnett.

Mike Rizzo and the big Free Agents

Will this be the year the Nats stay away from the big Free Agents? Rizzo has given some mixed signals, and this year seems like the Nats will not be the big buyers this off-season. That would mean for the Nats that there would be no David Price, no Zack Greinke, no Jason Heyward, no Justin Upton, no Chris Davis, no Cueto, no Cespedes and no Alex Gordon.  Interestingly, the only Boras client in the Top 10 projected Free Agents is Chris Davis, and it’s not unusual for the Nats to be tied to Boras clients which makes that a wait and see on the rumor mill.

Rizzo has said, “The 2016 Nats will be younger, less experienced but more athletic and speedier. A little transformation.”

Don’t expect this type of shocker (Tweet below) of a Free Agent signing for the #1 FA or anyone in the Top 5; however, don’t be shocked by a blockbuster trade and some key Free Agent signings.

Trade Options for a LH OF Bat

In the article My #1 FA Target: Ben Zobrist we looked at a comparison of some lefty FA bats.

Given Mike Rizzo’s propensity to pull off deals that no one saw coming, let’s pull something truly out of left field (pun intended). Continue reading

Thanksgiving & a Road Trip in search of the Holy Grail of Bryce Harper Memorabilia

Treasure hunting isn’t always limited to searching for a Pirates booty as we drove on dry land and into the mountains on our way into Pittsburgh Pirates territory deep into Pennsylvania to meet a Bryce Harper collector who was interested in selling one of the rarest of Bryce Harper items in existence.  A true treasure in the world of sports memorabilia. What we would later learn about the Bryce Harper item became a true Thanksgiving story. Continue reading

Giving thanks on our first Thanksgiving together!

There’s that funny theory that questions if a falling tree in a forest really makes noise if there is nobody around to hear it, and the same could be said for a blog as to whether it exists if nobody reads it.  Thanks to you all we get read and shared and have become a thriving Nats community.

Thanksgiving Eve and Clubhouse Chemistry & 25 co-workers #Nats Bryce Harper and Jonathan Papelbon

On this Thanksgiving Eve, we look back to all we are thankful for, but also what we take for granted.  We get ready to hang out for the Holidays with family and friends. It gets you thinking how difficult it is in this world, in this country, in this community for everyone to get along.  It takes some effort to co-exist peacefully and thoughtfully.

It also gets you thinking that we get along well here because we have moderators and filters and protections against those who want to cause problems, but in a clubhouse or even a dugout or the typical workplace, there isn’t always that peacemaker to make sure everyone gets along all the time.

At home growing up, you had Mom to keep the peace. She isn’t there looking over her 34 year old son and how he gets along with his 22 year old co-worker. Yes, Papelbon and Harper are co-workers. They aren’t buddies, pals, or friends, they are simply put, highly compensated co-workers.  Papelbon said they are like brothers, but do you really buy that? If you believe Ryan Zimmerman, watch and listen to his interview:
