Game #57 as Roark must be the stopper: Game Thread

The Nationals went into this series with a chance to gain ground in the standings, and the offense has totally sputtered along with poor starting pitching on Friday by Gio Gonzalez and yesterday’s 8th inning loss in the bullpen. Tanner Roark must be the stopper today, and get the Nationals back in the win column.

The most positive offensive production in the first 2 games in Cincinnati came on Friday night by the newbie, Trea Turner, and he got on-base 4 times in 4 plate appearances with a double, 2 singles, and a walk which matched the total hit production on Saturday as the Nats managed as a team to combine for 3 hits. On Saturday, Turner only appeared as a pinch-runner and was stranded at 1st base. It appears that as the Nationals head to Chicago after today’s game, Trea Turner will be sent back to meet his Triple-A Syracuse team.

The Reds are starting Jon Moscot today who returns after he was hit by a pitch in the head in his last start on May 31st and only lasted 2 innings. Only Ben Revere has faced Jon Moscot before in a game.

Here is Tanner Roark‘s stats against the Reds:

Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds
Stadium: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio

Strasburg leaves with an apparent leg issue. Nats lose after rain delay: Postgame

The Nats lost to the Reds 6-3, and tallied just 3 hits against one of the worst teams in baseball, but scored 3 runs on those 3 hits to keep the game tied into the bottom of the 8th inning. The bigger news might be Stephen Strasburg left in the 6th inning with an apparent leg issue, and the hopes it is nothing more than a cramp (see video below). It could have been his calf, his hip, his gluteus maximus, or his quadricep as the MASN broadcast showed Strasburg flexing his hip/glute/quad area multiple times and other times flexing and pulling at his calf. Hopefully it is nothing serious. Continue reading

Game #56 No Trea and no surprise: Game Thread

We wrote last night that Clint Robinson would start at 1st base which signaled a choice for Dusty Baker to either play Danny Espinosa at shortstop or Trea Turner and Dusty chose Espinosa. No surprise there.

It was the Trea Turner show and that was about it folks: Postgame

As everyone knows, tonight was Trea Turner‘s 2016 debut, and he was 3-3 with a walk and a double. His OPS is 2.333 and his defense was perfect. The only other highlights from this game were Jayson Werth‘s HR and Wilson Ramos came in to replace Jose Lobaton and was 1-1 with a double and a run scored. Ramos raised his batting average up to .342 and a .933 OPS. Continue reading

Game #55 Nats open in Cincy with Gio and Trea Turner!: Game Thread

Game #55 begins with a new look to the Washington Nationals as they have activated Trea Turner to take Ryan Zimmerman‘s spot on the roster as Ryan was moved to the paternity leave list.

laura 25 Turner being agile

We had been speculating since Spring Training about when we would see Trea Turner back in a Washington Nationals uniform. Turner’s team control date was set at May 30th, and we ran a poll piece on when readers thought Trea would be called up. Then we started speculating on Ryan Zimmerman’s ‘paternity leave’ coming up at the end of May (turned out to be June 3rd) and when Ryan was struggling it became an interesting discussion of playing Zim less and putting Murphy at 1st base where he played his best defensively which was snuffed out when Ryan Zimmerman stepped up his offensive output near the end of May. It’s time for the third 18-gamer so we’re a third through the season

When we left the Nats after game 36, they were 23-13, having followed a scorching 14-4 start by going 9-9 in their next 18 games. But .500 didn’t look too bad considering the tough opposition they faced (Cardinals, Royals, Cubs, Tigers) after getting swept by the Phillies to start off the set.

This time around, with a convincing sweep over the Phillies as May turned to June, the Nats were able to go 10-8.

So, as many have noted, 1/3 of the season is in the books, and the team sits at 12 games over .500 at 33-21. We’ve done it in sets of 14-4, 9-9, and 10-8. Continue reading

Catchers have been at the center of World Series Championships for a while

Last year Salvador Perez was the MVP of the World Series, and it seems like Buster Posey was the star for years before that, and before the Giants were winning 3 World Series it was the Cardinals who were doing it. In 2011, it was Yadier Molina who was batting over .300 for his Cardinals on the way to another World Series win.

Molina in 2011 was almost the exact age as Wilson Ramos is right now at 28 years old. Molina picked up a World Series ring in 2011 with the Cardinals. Molina is Puerto Rican and was a ‘defense first’ catcher who could handle a pitching staff as well as a bat, and Wilson Ramos got his finishing touches by another Puerto Rican catcher named Iván “Pudge” Rodríguez who mentored Ramos with the Nats in 2010 and 2011 as Wily moved from back-up catcher to starter in 2011 for the Washington Nationals.

Molina also struggled at the plate hitting just .216 in his 3rd year, and he and Ramos have talked before briefly. Molina’s advice is just stick with it. Work hard, grind, and you will get there. Ramos said, “It’s been a lot better. I’ve been more patient with my at-bats, and I’ve been able to handle the strike zone much, much more this season. I think that’s what I’m actually the happiest about.”

While Molina will be 34 years old next month, Ramos is the young catcher getting some much deserved recognition. Ramos is working towards bigger and better things. Ramos has never been named to an All-Star team, and has never been to a World Series. These are all bucket list items for Ramos, and he would like to do them with the Nationals.

We recently ran this story on Wilson Ramos and his free agency. Ramos had a great day yesterday, and must continue playing well to earn that All-Star spot. Unfortunately for the Buffalo, either Yadier Molina or Buster Posey will be the player chosen by the fan vote, and Ramos ranks 5th right now in the fan vote which just shows how little the fans care about voting the most worthy of players in. Ramos will have to be named to the All-Star team by the player’s vote or the manager’s vote because if it was left up to the final fan’s choice vote it probably won’t happen.

Dusty Baker couldn’t remember Wily’s nickname in his postgame presser after Ramos went 3-4 with a 3-run HR, and a RBI single. and thought it was “The Bull” and the media reminded him it was “The Buffalo”.

“He’s not called ‘The Buffalo’ for nothing. I’ve never seen a skinny buffalo—unless he’s real sick. It’s not surpising. This guy’s strong. We give him enough rest, we think, to keep him strong. He’s quietly having an outstanding year, and just going about his business.”

The numbers and stats that stand out large, and Ramos is again at the top of defensive catcher statistics and ranked 3rd in NL fielding percentage. To go with his career highlights along with the 3 no-hitters Ramos has caught, he was the catcher for Max Scherzer’s 20 strikeout game. Ramos’ .338 batting average is ranked #1 in the Majors as is his .919 OPS. The key at this point in the season is to keep it going because most forget how you started and only remember how you finish. #1 in Washington would be nice.

A big relief and help from the firemen. #Nats bullpen is on fire!

They used to call the best relievers ‘firemen’ and give them the Rolaids Award for being therolaids best reliever as they would put out the fires. Now they call them ‘stoppers’ and ‘fireballers’ and ‘bullpen aces’ and simply long men, LOOGY, ROOGY, set-up men, and closer.

The Nats relievers don’t really have any nicknames yet, and this crew just wants to be called #1 which they are in perhaps the most impressive statistic which is run prevention. Nationals’ relievers as a group are #1 in the Majors with the fewest runs given up on their record.

Also impressive is that the Nats relievers haven’t been over-used as a group compared to their peers, and only Toronto in the American League has used relievers less per inning. Continue reading

BREAKING: Ryan Zimmerman to paternity leave and Trea Turner to take his place on roster #Nats

Was it any coincidence yesterday when Trea Turner played 2nd base for his Syracuse team?

Trend lines are a tricky thing. Zim and Rendon are up. Others, not so fast.

People can debate Danny Espinosa all they want and who should start shortstop for this team, and who is hot and who is not. While Danny’s numbers in May are much better than they were in April (.185/.316/.246/.563), he was trending back down just before last week and then got red hot with this recent power surge.  Danny was 2-18 before the St. Louis Cardinals arrived in town. Danny is in a 7 game power streak where he is  5-24 overall and 4 of the hits are home runs. That is a .208 batting average. Well, that’s not a great batting average but that 14 day moving OPS is trending up and his UZR and Range ratings have also shot straight up. Espinosa went from April where his range rating was negative to a cumulative +3.0 and a +4.2 UZR making him the 4th highest rated defensive shortstop.

Murphy is so hot that when he had a 1-4 night last night with a triple that it hurt his 14 day trendline, and clearly he is the hottest guy on the planet other than Mookie Betts. Continue reading
