Hector Gomez report: Nats offer Juan Soto $425 million!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The baseball world, on a quiet day,  got a jolt when Hector Gomez tweeted that there were additional negotiations and a new offer for Juan Soto.  After the offer of $350 million over 13 years was made over the winter and rejected, the Nats made an offer of $425 million per Gomez.

Game #78 Nats are trying to keep the momentum going!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

They say that momentum is only as good as your next game’s pitcher, and here we are with Paolo Espino who pitched well enough to beat the Phillies until a bullpen implosion, and again last time out against the Rangers. The issue with Espino is going deep into games. He actually pitched into the sixth inning over the weekend in Texas going 5 1/3 of one run baseball.

Since Espino’s doubleheader start against Philadephia on June 17, the Nats starters have a 1.82 ERA and that includes two turns through the order for the current rotation of Espino, Josiah Gray, Jackson Tetreault, Erick Fedde, and last night’s hero, Patrick Corbin. Continue reading

The Washington Nationals current rotation has gone aces!

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

Did Jackson Tetreault inspire some new-found confidence in the Washington Nationals rotation? He was selected in the 7th round of the 2017 draft, and was never a highly regarded prospect in the Nats’ system and was never a consideration to pitch for the Nats until recently as he was probably tenth on the depth chart — yet here he is. Why? Because it’s baseball. Continue reading

Game #77 Patrick Corbin gets a “new look” defense behind him!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The statistics say that Patrick Corbin has been victimized the most by the defense behind him, and tonight, manager Dave Martinez is putting in the best defense he has, and to be honest, besides Victor Robles in centerfield, that is not a great defense. Yes, Lane Thomas in leftfield, and Alcides Escobar replacing Luis Garcia, are upgrades on paper. The last time that Escobar started a game for the Washington Nationals was last month on May 31. Game #76 Fedde is the Nats top WAR pitcher!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

Sans Patrick Corbin, this Washington Nationals rotation on this 8-day stretch are looking like they found a path that works. In two starts, Jackson Tetreault has one earnie on his record, and that was from an inherited runner who scored. Also in two starts, Josiah Gray has only allowed two earned runs. Erick Fedde, tonight’s starter, is trying to best both of them as he adds to his scoreless streak of 7 2/3 innings going into this game. In all and including Corbin, this rotation has a 1.52 ERA in this span. Continue reading

Game #74 Josiah Gray is part of a special week!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

This past week has the Washington Nationals starting staff with the best ERA in baseball at 1.27 (1.88 for the whole staff) and that includes Patrick Corbin’s three runs over four innings in Baltimore in Wednesday. Continue reading

TJ White at another level; Mitchell Parker throwing zeroes!

The big news of the day was actually off the field news from general manager Mike Rizzo that nothing is wrong with top pitching prospect Cade Cavalli. The Nats are just giving him a mid-season breather. On pitching prospect Cole Henry, he is dealing with some shoulder tenderness per Rizzo. Henry was placed on the IL earler in the week after a long absence. Continue reading

Game #73 with the first trip to the Texas Rangers in over 17 years!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

This is the Washington Nationals first trip to face the Rangers in Texas since Father’s Day in 2005. It was before Ryan Zimmerman was with the team, and one of the two cities he never played in along with Seattle. The Rangers of course come from the roots of the Washington Senators after owner Bob Short relocated them there for the 1972 season. That franchise has never won a World Series, and only has eight postseason appearances in their 61 year history. Maybe it is the curse of Bob Short?!? Continue reading
