Yes, it can continue for Joey Meneses with an improbable walk-off HR!

Last week, I wrote about the improbable run of Joey Meneses  and what makes him different from other older rookies, or in this case, he is a 30 year old rookie doing what no other player has done in a Nationals’ uniform. His movie script isn’t fully written and that’s why we play the games. Would you believe tonight he hit his first career walk-off in a 2-strike, 2-out, extra inning situation with his team behind by a run. It was a 3-run smash. As he rounded the bases, the fans who remained were chanting, “Joey, Joey, Joey, Joey.” Continue reading

Game #131 Winner takes the series!

Nationals Park, Washington, D.C. | Paolo Espino records a strikeout; Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals are 7-9 in their previous 16-games. And while that is nothing to brag about for a good team, it is very good for this Nats team to be at a .438 winning percentage for over half a month after their sell-off at the trade deadline. A win today would put the team in a much better situation as they will go up against all potential playoff teams with series against the Mets starting tomorrow, Cardinals on Monday (four games), Phillies the following weekend, and then back home for a day-off on September 12. New beginnings in 2023; Spring Training schedule is released!

We are 167 days away from Spring Training camp opening, and an early start to the Spring Training games on February 25, 2023. These are new beginnings, and we have no idea who will be sitting in the owner’s seats at that time or the players who will be signed to MLB contracts. Continue reading

Game #130 August comes to a close!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

We are in the final few hours of August before the rosters can expand by one pitcher and one position player tomorrow as the calendar turns to September 1. Just 32-games after tonight will be remaining in the season for final auditions for next season.

Part of the debate will be on whether Ted Williams Joey Meneses should start next year as well as Ildemaro Vargas, and then a further debate will be, do you tender contracts to Luke Voit who will be due over $6 million and Victor Robles over $2 million?

The Oakland A’s took last night’s game as Erick Fedde just didn’t have it for the Nats, and he lasted just 2 2/3 innings. The domino effect was an overused bullpen leading Cory Abbott to be placed in the bullpen in place of Cade Cavalli who was officially placed on the 15-day IL with shoulder inflammation. On regular rest, Paolo Espino will start tomorrow’s series finale instead of pitching Friday against the Mets. Continue reading

Game #129 A’s for the first-time ever in Nats Park

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

There have been plenty of Oakland A’s players traded to the Washington Nationals like Gio Gonzalez at the top of the list with Sean Doolittle and others. But the Oakland A’s team has never played before at Nationals Park until tonight (weather permitting). Continue reading

The Best Use of What’s Left of ‘22

Sunday Nats

Photo by Laura Peebles for TalkNats

There are different thresholds of devotion of the baseball fan. The most obvious is continued allegiance in the face of losing. Then there is our shared level, which is continued engagement. As the calendar churns toward Indian Summer, however, most Washington Nationals fans might be tempted to drift toward other shiny objects, such as the winter sports and college football. After all, the MLB draft and trading deadline have passed, and indeed the Nats have made, apparently, all the major moves we are likely to see before the Hot Stove begins. Continue reading

Joey Meneses is in rare air, but can it continue?

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

Many baseball careers have happy beginnings and sad endings like those novels in the discount bin at Barnes & Noble. We want to embrace those happy times like a lover, wrapping our arms around them, and never wanting to believe it can end. We are in that newlywed period with a 30 year old rookie. We embrace it, and at the same time — a little skeptical as to the cruelty of this game that can suck that positivity right out of you because baseball is so hard and unforgiving. Why? Because you lived through Clint Robinson‘s 30 year old rookie season and then his sophomore season in 2016. But what if Joey Meneses  is different? Well, that’s why we play the games.  Continue reading

Game #128 Salvage game….again.

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

Tell us if you’ve heard the joke before that the Washington Nationals must win to salvage a series and avoid a sweep. Only this is no joke to those in NatsTown. Last night veteran reliever Jake McGee entered a 1-1 game as another Nats starter got too much rope, exiting with two on-base and one out, and the game’s outcome hung on needing two quick outs. Continue reading
