The Ownership Team – Some Insights on David Rubenstein

As Steve has been reporting, it appears that Ted Leonsis will eventually be the new owner of the Nationals; or at least a significant minority partner. It has also been reported that David Rubenstein is a partner in that effort. Rubenstein is a Private Equity (PE) billionaire who made his fortune as the CEO of the DC based Carlyle Group. So what do we know about David Rubenstein? To answer that question, I talked to a former friend/colleague who served as a senior executive at the Carlyle Group when Rubenstein was the CEO. What follows is a summary of that conversation conducted over beers at a local brew pub during a visit this past weekend at his house in NJ. Ryan Zimmerman Had an Underrated Career

Ryan Zimmerman had a career that many people outside of the Washington, D.C. area are overlooking. It isn’t a Hall of Fame career, rather one of the best careers for any player wearing a Washington Nationals uniform. The third baseman earned the nickname “Mr. National” and gave this franchise hope in the dark years during the teams first six years in their existence — before the team started winning. Zimmerman brought loyalty, consistency, and leadership to the Washington Nationals. Not only was he the first ever draft pick by the Nats back in 2005, but Zimmerman also went to the University of Virginia and grew up in Virginia. Today he makes his home for his family in McLean, Virginia. As a player growing up nearby made him a fan favorite before he even stepped a foot on the diamond. Continue reading →

Game #162 is the Nats’ finale to a disappointing 2022 season!

Back at the start of the season, you had hope for one of those miracles where the Washington Nationals would beat the analyst’s projections. It turned out to be the opposite. The projections were too kind to the Nats. The disappointments came in bunches, and on the final game of the season, just more question marks as additional injuries piled up. Victor Robles is out with a calf injury, CJ Abrams with a shoulder injury, and Keibert Ruiz remains out with a testicular contusion. Even general manager Mike Rizzo has called the oft-injured Stephen Strasburg a “mystery” when discussing his future. The good news is that Robles, Abrams, and Ruiz should all be healthy and ready for Spring Training. Continue reading →
