BREAKING: MacKenzie Gore traded to the Washington Senators um Texas Rangers

BREAKING NEWS: MacKenzie Gore has been traded to the Washington Senators Texas Rangers in a return of five players featuring Gavin Fien who was the 12th overall draft pick last year plus Abimelec Ortiz, Devin Fitz-Gerald, Alejandro Rosario and Yeremy Cabrera. Ortiz is on the 40-man roster and would conceivably take Gore’s spot. This was a 5-for-1 trade, but no current Top-100 prospects in this package.

The do-over opportunity for the Nats young players

Have you ever played the “blame game”?  It’s easy to point a finger at others, and when you do that — three fingers are usually pointing back at you. For some, it is difficult to choose accountability as you look into the mirror. After a firing of bosses, some use that as the excuse that the system was flawed — and maybe it was in partial terms. For others, it’s just a clean slate.

Almost every Washington Nationals player should have done their own introspective on what went wrong-and-right in their 2025 season. Some could decide to blame their previous manager and/or coaches for their shortcomings. In fact, only one MLB coach was retained in his previous role, and that is Sean Doolittle who will return as the Assistant Pitching Coach. Per a source, Gerardo Parra will move from being the MLB first base coach to a front office position (TBD) in player development. Even most of the front office personnel weren’t retained.

“In NO WAY are we set going into West Palm” — Paul Toboni

The Washington Nationals President of Baseball Operations, Paul Toboni, appeared on MLB Network Radio on Sunday. Much of what was discussed you have heard before from Toboni, then he was asked by @JimBowdenGM and @JimDuquetteGM if he is ready for West Palm Beach, referring to the team’s Spring Training site. Toboni answered that, “We’re an attractive landing spot” for free agents, and he explained why. Toboni also said, “We’re continuing to have trade conversations with other teams … those conversations are ongoing.” Then he finished by saying, “In NO WAY are we set going into West Palm.” For anyone who read our sourced tweet five days ago, that confirmed what we wrote.

Trade Candidates Other Than Gore

There has been a lot of discussion this Hot Stove season about trades regarding the Washington Nationals. Not just discussion on TalkNats, but also on the national stage. Some would say that no player has received more trade buzz than MacKenzie Gore. On a more local level, CJ Abrams has received some trade buzz too. The trades that actually got done were both surprises with closer Jose A. Ferrer going to Seattle for catcher Harry Ford, and after that, minor league starter Jake Bennett got traded for minor league starter Luis Perales.

At his point in time, both Gore and Abrams are still with the Nats, and it is looking more likely that neither will be traded before Spring Training camp opens. But — you never know!

The Washington Nationals announce their 2026 International Free Agent class of 15 players!

The wait to get to January 15 marks the date that the Washington Nationals will announce their newest international free agency (IFA) class. The signings today are led by four players ranked in Baseball America by the amount of their signing bonuses to include №16 Samil Serrano ($1.97 million), №18 Isaias Suarez ($1.9 million), №52 Angel Ramirez ($1 million), and №53 Juan Duran ($1 million). They are all listed as primary outfielders from the Dominican Republic. Official signing lists can get announced at 11am this morning.

Expect at least a dozen IFAs signed by the Nats today. Follow Nationals Source, @francysromeroFR rankings, and FanGraphs for additional information on the signings. Also, MLB Pipeline will putting up their rankings. Baseball America has a bonus tracker for all teams on this link.
