The Washington Nationals are back in Miami for their final NL East series of this 2021 season. There will certainly be a sense of déjà vu as the two starting pitchers will face each other for the third time in a month. These teams are separated by just two games in the standings. Will Smith is barely a footnote in Juan Soto‘s life. With a half-dozen HBPs in Soto’s career, Smith might be the only pitcher who has plunked the superstar intentionally though. The Braves lefty closer is just one of the 81 pitchers that Soto has victimized in his career for a home run. If anyone should be upset, it should be Aaron Nola of the Phillies. Nola has served up a trio of dingers to Soto. The 22-year-old is locked and loaded for another run at the league’s MVP. In his four-year career, this will be Soto’s third Top-10 finish in MVP voting, and maybe he deserves to win it this year. Continue reading

With this shutout win today, the Washington Nationals need just two more wins this season to avoid the dreaded 100-loss season. It appears like there will be four teams surpassing 100 loss plateau this season, which is a black eye on MLB to have so many underperforming teams. All of those teams have spent well under $99 million in team payroll and the Pirates and Orioles have total team payrolls in the $50 million range according to Spotrac. The Nats issue has nothing to do with payroll, as the team spent money, which is why their ineptitude to get to a winning record is disheartening and led to a sell-off. Continue reading

The Washington Nationals have 14-games remaining and must go 3-11 to avoid losing 100-games this season. Today’s game is a salvage in this series with the Rockies. Can they figure out how to score runs, take a lead, and keep that lead to the end of a game? The team is now 5-12 this month. The Washington Nationals have found 86 excruciating ways to lose so far this season, and with 16 remaining games, there will be several more to endure. A season that started with a black cloud over the team’s head with Opening Day postponed due to COVID, it just seems that we could have expected the worst. And we are living it game by game.
Stephen Strasburg was basically lost for the whole season, and Patrick Corbin has pitched to the level of a scrub. The bullpen is just awful, and yet, we still find reasons to watch this team because of players like Josh Rogers and Lane Thomas, and arguably the best player in baseball — Juan Soto. The Washington Nationals were shutout last night and almost were the victim of a no-hitter. They will face Jesús Luzardo who the Nats traded away in the Sean Doolittle deal. Luzardo at one-time was the top lefty pitching prospect in all of baseball. In his last three starts, he has put together a 2.60 ERA over 17 1/3 innings. Continue reading
