The G.O.A.T. aka Juan Soto turned 23 today! Happy Birthday!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The 2021 season opened bittersweet for the Washington Nationals. They won on a walk-off hit by Juan Soto on the rescheduled Opening Day. It was the first walk-off of Soto’s career as the team beat the Atlanta Braves. Covid had ravaged the Nats projected lineup to start the season. Of the nine players in that lineup, only three would finish the season with the team. Soto was one of them of course. Continue reading

What’s next this offseason for the #Nats?

Erick Fedde watches one fly during a June 2021 game against the Atlanta Braves.

As we all “enjoy” another “thrilling” MLB postseason, the Washington Nationals are getting ready for what will be the most unusual offseason they have had in quite some time.

Nats management has been careful about the “r-word”. No one wants to definitively say the Nats are a rebuilding team, with general manager Mike Rizzo preferring to say this is a reboot. No matter how you slice it, the Nats were really bad in 2021, not much better in 2020, and don’t look like they have a lot of help on its way from one of baseball’s lowest-rated minor league systems.

On the flip side, payroll is way down, so is the roster’s median age, and the Nats have a lot of control over what their 2022 Opening Day roster looks like. They have few pending free agents and a number of players “on the bubble” who might or might not suit up for the team next year. Much of this is up to Nats management.

The Arizona Fall League begins today; Jackson Rutledge and Cole Henry headline the 7 Nats on the roster!

The Arizona Fall League gets started today, and the season will finish with their championship game on November 20. There are six teams in the league, and each AFL team is comprised from players that come from five MLB minor league systems, and from there, teams that have chosen six players to participate and one taxi squad player on each roster. The Washington Nationals players are part of the Surprise Saguaros.

Mario Lisson will manage the roster with the Nats players which will also include top prospects from the Reds, Rangers, Royals, and Yankees in this year’s AFL. Lisson managed the Nats Low-A affiliate Fredericksburg Nationals. He is originally from Venezuela and bilingual which certainly has helped him communicate with almost every player in whatever language they speak. Continue reading
