Two Would’ve Won It, Nats Lose 1-0 In Rubber Match: A Recap

This series started with a shimmer of hope on Monday night, only to get a little sadder last night, and this afternoon it all came crashing down. A combination of a gem by Nick Pivetta, some terrible approaches by Washington hitters, and a lockdown San Diego bullpen all contributed to a very disheartening 1-0 loss as MacKenzie Gore, once again, takes another hard luck loss.

Game #81 The middle math!

The Washington Nationals keep doing that Hokey-Pokey dance where you put one foot in and one foot out and you don’t get ahead, you just shake it all about. While that dance might be fun, losing sucks — let’s just be honest about that. Finishing the night and taking over last place in the NL East is a stain on the Nationals’ organization in a year when we were promised that this team was improved.

Truth be told, it should have improved. The pre-Winter Meetings roster had positive vibes with the much needed addition by subtraction as the team cut ties with many players who were negative performers. Players play the games. Coaches make key decisions. General managers sign the players. Owners set the budget. All of those components funnel into the product on the field — for good and bad. Right now, the record speaks for itself.

Nats Fall Just Short In San Diego: A Recap

Early on in this one, it looked like we may be in for another offensive output similar to last night’s. Unfortunately, the Padres’ bullpen brought their best stuff tonight, squashing all hopes of a fruitful evening for the Nationals’ bats. The Nats played well enough to win tonight, they did a good job of keeping traffic on the base paths, and the pitching was good for most of the game. In the end they came up just one clutch hit short of taking the first two games of this series in San Diego.

Game #80 Nats have a series to win

The Washington Nationals bats came alive in the first game of this series in San Diego to run away with a 10-6 win. Mitchell Parker completed 6.0 innings last night, and the team is now 8-8 (.500) in his starts — even though his run support had been lacking over his previous five starts.

Pounding at Petco, Nats Explode to Take Game One: A Recap

Tonight was one of the nights that leaves me grinning, filled with hope for what this team could be in a very short time. Tonight was a night that gives Nationals fans the rare opportunity to sit back and just enjoy watching a beatdown of a good baseball team, not an opportunity we are afforded very often. The Nats played the very definition of a complete game tonight. The offense was tremendous, the pitching was great, and the defense made some outstanding plays to help keep this game in Washington control.

Game #79 Nats are in San Diego for 3-games

The Washington Nationals took a bus down I-5 from Los Angeles to San Diego last night. A promising start to yesterday’s game was replaced by angst as the Nats gave up their 3-0 lead against the Dodgers en route to a blowout loss. A year ago in San Diego, the Nats entered that game with a 9th inning lead and a chance to get back to .500. Let’s just say that was the series that put the Nationals in a nose-dive with the realization the Nats were going to be sellers at the trade deadline.

A Tale of Two Halves, Promising Start Turns to Disaster: A Recap

Singer Luke Combs famously repeated, “When it rains it pours,” and that could not be a more accurate descriptor of what we just watched. It almost feels like I just watched two completely different games. The Washington Nationals dominated the first half of this ballgame, but games have to be played to the end. The final four innings completely unraveled over the course of two innings. Michael Soroka‘s great 5.0 innings of domination were wiped off the final stat line as if it was just a mirage.

Game #78 Nats go for the series and season win against the Dodgers!

The Washington Nationals dominated the game last night against the Dodgers to even this series and go up 3-2 in the season series. Remember, the Nats won the series in Washington, D.C. in early April. A win today by the Nats would win this series and the season series. Quite the accomplishment if the Nationals can pull this off. After this game, the Nationals will bus down to San Diego to start a 3-game series tomorrow.
