Nats 4-2 win over the Marlins and Joe Ross goes 7 strong innings giving up only 1 run with a Blake Treinen 1-2-3 8th inning, and Jonathan Papelbon earned the save for his 3rd of the season.

Game #4 vs. the Marlins. Harper going for HR history! Game Thread

The weather has been the story for a while, and today Mother Nature will cooperate with chilly air but no rain or snow. If you count back 21 days into Spring Training and through yesterday, the Nats have played a total of only 12 games in that time span. Expect temperature’s for 1st pitch around 48°F to 52°F with some sunshine.

Today’s Sunday 1:35pm matchup after Saturday’s cancellation for inclement weather is scheduled with the same starters from Saturday. Joe Ross goes for the Washington Nationals, and Max Scherzer will now pitch on Monday.

This game has some historic implications with the Marlins as Bryce Harper will face his favorite pitcher Tom Koehler who Harper has owned in terms of long-balls per at-bat. Harper is 7-24 and 5 of those hits are HRs. Harper is 1 HR away from career HR 100 and the cold weather will not help the flight of the ball and winds could make things interesting as well.

When Bryce hits his next HR, he will join exclusive company to be among the youngest and fastest to the 100 HR mark joining Hall of Famers like Mel Ott who was the youngest as he hit HR 100 at the age of 22 years 132 days.

Lucas Giolito could get a call-up on May 14th. Doubleheader duty!

The Nationals game scheduled for today was cancelled. Advantage to the Nationals who are playing short-handed without tablesetter Ben Revere and MLB rules also allow for a 26th player to be added to one of the doubleheader games which is the perfect setting for Lucas Giolito‘s debut on the makeup game of May 14th.

Spotlight on Matt den Dekker of the Washington Nationals

When Matt den Dekker was traded to the Nats last year at the very end of Spring Training, it was a surprising trade with the Mets for Jerry Blevins. You usually don’t see division rivals helping to fill the other team’s needs like the Nats did getting the Mets their coveted lefty specialist. Continue reading

#Nats Game #3 Instant Analysis

The story of this game was:

  • BABIP (that favored the Marlins and hurt the Nats).
  • Not great defense.
  • And what appeared to be an uncharacteristically very bad game by Lance Barksdale. Probably need to retract this
I want to clone Lance Barkdale so he can be the Home Plate Umpire for every game.

So not much good news. But there is some.

Game #3 Opening Day in Washington DC – Game Thread #Nats

Do you remember those Train To Reign shirts from Spring Training? Change that to Rain To Reign. The weather will once again be a factor for the Washington Nationals and it changed up the starting rotation already.

#Nats sweep 2 game series in Atlanta to start the season 2-0 Den Dekker is the story!

Matt den Dekker last year came in to pinch-hit versus the Dodgers on July 17th, and hit a game-winning ‘Upper Dekker’ HR which was only the 3rd of his career. Tonight he arrives to the park in the 5th inning and you don’t know how his timing is, and he once again doesn’t get caught up in the situation, and steps in to pinch-hit 2 innings after he arrived at the stadium on a flight from Syracuse.  MdD rattled the outfield wall with a bases clearing double for the game winning RBIs. You can’t make this stuff up!

If you don’t believe it, at least watch the replay:

Game #2 in Atlanta for the #Nats Game Thread with No Revere (DL)

Mike Rizzo and  Dusty Baker have the complications of setting their Game #2 line-up without their tablesetter Ben Revere who landed on the DL with the oblique strain and the Nats recall Matt den Dekker. The Nats will face RHP Bud Norris in this 7:10pm match-up against Stephen Strasburg.

With the day-off on Tuesday, you can expect that all relievers will be available in this game.

Decision Day on Ben Revere’s injury

Ben Revere sustained an injury to his right-side oblique and ribcage area. Revere said after Monday’s Opening Day that he would take his meds and get some rest and see how he feels. On Tuesday he got some treatment, and today we will be in wait and see mode on how Revere feels and what the team decides to do.

It’s fairly clear that if Ben Revere had to go on the DL that Rizzo would call-up Matt den Dekker as the extra outfielder, and the starting centerfielder would be Michael A. Taylor.

The Nationals could also determine that Revere only needs a few days rest and not make a DL move and go a man short.
