Max Scherzer gets win #19 and Nats get win #92: Postgame

Tonight it was Anthony Rendon who came through with the game winning three-run home run with two outs to get the Nats to a 4-2 win, and it allowed Max Scherzer to get the win. The Nats entered the bottom of the 6th inning trailing 2-0, and Scherzer was pulled for a pinch-hitter. The only way for Scherzer to earn a win was for the Nats offense to score at least three runs in the bottom of the 6th, and the Nats got four runs!

The Diamondback starter, Matt Koch, was making his first career start and took a no-hitter into the 6th inning which was broken up when Jose Lobaton led off with a bloop single followed by a walk by Wilmer Difo (PH for Scherzer) and a walk by Trea Turner. The Nats scored their first run on a sacrifice fly and with two outs Rendon lined a three-run home run into the Diamondbacks bullpen.

Anthony Rendon’s home run was also his 500th hit of the career. Tonight’s win was the Nationals 92nd of the season. The Nats magic number for home field advantage is 5. Continue reading →

Game #157 Scherzer has another start: Game Thread

The news was not good on the health of Wilson Ramos’ right knee has he has torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) which has finished Wilson Ramos’ season with the Nats, and it is quite possible that yesterday will be the last game Ramos ever plays for the Washington Nationals as he is scheduled to be a free agent after the season.

A.J. Cole has been suspended for five games for throwing behind Jung-ho Kang on Sunday, and Cole is appealing. Cole was immediately ejected after the pitch behind Kang.

Stephen Strasburg soft-tossed at a distance of 90 feet today. Strasburg will not be considered as a starter for the NLDS, and there is only a slim chance he could be added to the bullpen for the NLDS.

Now for the game time news, Bryce Harper wanted to play today, but Dusty Baker is holding him out. Daniel Murphy remains out resting his strain in his gluteus maximus.

Max Scherzer is getting another start tonight and could possibly make one additional start on Sunday on regular rest, but that could be just an abbreviate start as Scherzer most likely will start Game #1 of the NLDS five days from Sunday.

The loss of the game came with the loss of All-Star Wilson Ramos: Postgame

The Nationals lost this game 14-4 to the Diamondbacks, and lost Wilson Ramos who left the game with an apparent knee injury. Ramos injured the same knee that was surgically repaired before. We fear the worse, and hope for the best.

The Nationals now have four of their five 2016 All-Stars out of action right now with Stephen Strasburg, Daniel Murphy, Bryce Harper and now Wilson Ramos with varying medical issues.

The highlights were few tonight on the Nationals side except for three players on offense. Trea Turner had three hits tonight including a key two-RBI double. The other two RBIs came from Brian Goodwin who had a key triple and a well-earned walk with bases loaded. Ryan Zimmerman added two hits tonight.

Espinosa, Werth, and Rendon each left three men on-base, and each went hitless in the game.

Game #156 Nats in final week of 162: Game Thread

The Nationals are in the final week of the regular season and begin this series tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tonight’s game has Tanner Roark starting for the Washington Nationals with another chance to show the baseball world that he is Cy Young worthy. Roark has been a workhorse throwing over 200 innings this season with a 2.70 ERA which ranks him fourth in the Major Leagues with only Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester and Noah Syndergaard ahead of him.

Archie Bradley pitches for the Diamondbacks, and he last faced the Nationals on August 1st and took the loss.

Two roster moves were made today. The first one impacts the active roster as Sammy Solis was moved off of the 15-day DL to the active roster making 39 players active from the 40 man roster leaving just Spencer Kieboom inactive. Chris Bostick who was designated for assignment last week has now been traded by the Nationals to the Pirates for Taylor Gushue who is a catcher. Gushue was a 4th round pick in 2014 by the Pirates out of the University of Florida. Gushue struggled in High-A Bradenton this year. He is a switch-hitter and is 22-years-old.

JDub pinch-hits the Nats to another win as we wait on Harper news: Postgame

The Nationals were behind 7-5 in the 8th inning. Dusty Baker called on Jayson Werth to pinch-hit against ex-teammate Felipe Rivero, and Werth delivered a booming two-run HR over the centerfield wall to tie the game at 7-7. PNC Park had plenty of cheers from the Nats fans who stayed in Pittsburgh an extra day after watching the Nationals clinch the NL East crown last night. Continue reading →

Today’s game will be played in the shadow of the tragic death of Jose Fernandez and two of his friends as the baseball family mourns this loss of life at an age much too young to leave us.

The Marlins have cancelled their game today, but the rest of the teams will play as scheduled with a moment of silence.

Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Jose Fernandez

His last pitching appearance we got to witness his mastery in the 1-0 win over the Nationals.

We mourn the passing of Jose Fernandez. Today’s game has been cancelled.

We sent out a short release on this, and we had just done that story about José Fernandez and Trea Turner.  Trea Turner’s high school coach Larry Greenstein just responded simply, “no words right now.” Indeed, it is shocking. Trea’s father, “Sad News.”

There was that day that Eduardo Perez described as “Jose Day” when he pitched and the crowds were 30% larger.

“Fernandez had found freedom on one boat, and now his life had ended on another,” Cuban-American sports writer Dan LeBatard said.
