Game #159 Salvage game in Atlanta

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals were in last night’s game until the end. The score was tied 1-1 at the top of the 6th inning. Interim-manager Miguel Cairo shoved starter Brad Lord for one more inning to face the hot Braves’ lineup for a third time, and he quickly gave up a homer. Sure, two runs over 6.0 innings is good — but with a 10-man bullpen, why not see what your bullpen could do. The Nats lost 3-2.

Maybe the most significant part of last night’s game was that this had to be the best we have seen of James Wood in months. He started his night with a double then in his next at-bat he sprinted to first base on a groundout and was out by one stride, and in his final at-bat, Wood hit a homer off of a lefty reliever. He had one walk, and no strikeouts in the game. The 6’7″ lefty looked like our All-Star we fell in love with in the first half of the season.

Game #158 Win out to finish at 69?

Photo by Garrett Lang for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals are playing for pride, yet respectability left the station months ago. No chance of reaching 70-wins, the Nats would have to win out just to get to 69. With 64-wins in the books, Vegas will only pay off those who were pessimistic and took the “under” on the season win total. Even the great first 87-games from James Wood and MacKenzie Gore were soiled with second half slumps.

For Gore, he went into the All-Star game with a 3.02 ERA and his season ended yesterday with an ankle impingement and a 4.17 ERA. We will see if Andrew Alvarez, Cade Cavalli, and Brad Lord can beat his ERA. For Wood, he had a .958 and was a Top-5 player in baseball that week before the All-Star break. Today, he is trying to stay above an .800 OPS and attempting not to set the ignominious strikeout record he is nine away from taking away from Mark Reynolds. Not the type of record you want to own. On top of that, Daylen Lile leapfrogged Wood for the team lead in OPS on Sunday. Yesterday Wood got a rest day to keep his strikeouts at 215.

The Washington Nationals Biggest Priorities Entering the MLB Offseason

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

Another year, another MLB season in which the Washington Nationals failed to sniff a winning season, let alone a playoff berth. So…what’s next?

This is the question the Nats are tasked with tackling over the MLB offseason. And it has a wide variety of potential answers. There are that many different directions in which Washington can head, and it will start with building a new front office that includes the player development group, draft group, and scouting. They could look to fast-track their timeline if they have broader budgetary constraints, and spend their way out in free agency which most don’t expect. They could consign themselves to the more gradual course they were supposed to have been on — you know, the one that derailed off the tracks this year — the one that has resulted in six straight losing seasons. Or they could look to straddle the line in between.

Game #157 The Boys of Autumn are in Atlanta

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals shocked the New York Mets over the weekend, and played the spoiler role to the point that if the season ended yesterday, the Mets would have lost the playoff tie-breaker against the Reds, and the Mets would not have made the playoffs.

Luckily for the Mets, three teams make the Wild Card in each league, and they just have to hope the Reds falter in this final week. Unfortunately for the Nationals and the Braves, they are both just playing for pride as both teams have already been eliminated from playoff contention. As summer officially ended today, the Boys of Autumn have six more games to play before their offseason begins later on Sunday.

Game #156 Nats go for a tough series win as the spoiler!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals had the game seemingly won on Saturday with Jose A. Ferrer in to face the top of the order with 2-outs and a 3-0 lead. He did have two runners on-base with pinch-hitter Mark Vientos batting. For some reason, Brady House was not guarding the line and Vientos poked a grounder down the line and past a lunging House.

Game #155 The current losing streak has made 71 wins impossible

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals are down to their final 8-games of the season. With just 62-wins in the books, there is no way to sugarcoat it. The corner outfielders made three errors yesterday, leading to two unearned runs. The sloppy play was seen in the pitching and hitting approaches too.

Game #154 Nats have just 3 series remaining in the season!

The Washington Nationals are down to their final 9-games of the season. With just 62-wins, there is no way to sugarcoat it. The good vibes will only come from a strong finish and meaningful upgrades in the front office and coaching staff.

A Top-50 Prospect List to Stir the Pot

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The top prospects list has completely upended from the beginning of the year until now. People like Brad Lord, Daylen Lile and others prove that while minor league success does not guarantee major league impact, prospect pedigree does not account for everything, either — the ability to establish a good record on the MLB roster and with good health has something to do with it.

Game #153 Nats have a salvage game today!

Photos by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals have had more ups and downs this year than the elevator in the in the media lobby. A gut-punch loss last night, and watching James Wood mightily struggle in a second half collapse is beyond troublesome. He is now pacing worse than Mark Reynolds’ MLB ignominious record of 223 strikeouts, set in 2009.
