Game #4 is the debut of Anibal Sanchez for the #Nats

The Cardinals travel to the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches where Adam Wainwright and Anibal Sanchez will start for their respective teams. For Sanchez, this game will be his Nationals debut. The Nationals team so far with the starters in the games have looked very crisp. Other than the lead-off batter in the Grapefruit opener, the Nats starting pitchers have not yielded a run although the sample size is all of 6 innings in total. Between Max Scherzer, Erick Fedde, and Patrick Corbin, they have looked very good. Even Joe Ross in relief of Scherzer on Saturday looked great as he went 2.0 innings of shutout baseball. Game #3 Nats travel to Disney for Patrick Corbin’s debut!

<a rel=

When the Washington Nationals had their Spring Training home in Viera, they were about an hour away by bus to Champion Field in Disney to play the Braves. The teams played each other several times each spring. With the Nationals and Astros move to West Palm Beach, it is the Braves who are far from all teams except for the Tigers in Lakelands, Florida which led the Braves to seek their own relocation. The Braves secured a new stadium deal in Sarasota, however, the complex was not ready for this season so the Braves extended their lease on the Disney grounds for one more season.

The roundtrip is a 326 mile bus drive, and a lengthy 2 1/2 hours each way from FITTEAM to Champion Field.  Today’s starting pitcher for the Nats, Patrick Corbin, decided to drive up yesterday on his own to avoid the early morning bus ride that is set to leave at 7:15 AM from the FITTEAM complex in West Palm Beach. #Nats officially have a winning streak going…

The Washington Nationals have come out firing in Grapefruit League play. But while they had to come back to win last night, today’s contest at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter against the St. Louis Cardinals was pretty much a rout.

Starters Erick Fedde and Michael Wacha acquitted themselves well, with the Nats’ Fedde flashing a sharp breaking ball and locating his fastball well to the corners of the strikezone as he gave up one hit and nothing else over two brisk innings. The Nats’ relief corps mostly held up well. Austin Voth let up a solo home run to Cardinals outfielder Tyler O’Neill, and after Koda Glover walked the bases loaded, Austen Williams let in an inherited runner after a line drive popped out of the glove of second baseman Jacob Wilson. But the Cardinals collapsed, with a parade of relievers including Daniel Ponce de Leon, Genesis Cabrera, and Andrew Morales struggling badly. The Nats pulled away in the middle innings and won 12-2. Game #2 Nats travel north to Jupiter to face the Cardinals

The Washington Nationals will take to the road from their home stadium at the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches and the 14 miles north to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Some of the Nats players actually have Spring Training residences closer to Jupiter and will drive themselves, and this is why the Nationals relocated from Viera to Palm Beach County so they could avoid long road trips even though the team has one of them tomorrow when they head to Disney to play the Braves. Nats win on a walk-off by Adrian Sanchez; Max Scherzer not a fan of the pitch clock!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

Game 1 of the Grapefruit League schedule is in the books as the Nats won this one on a booming 3-run Spencer Kieboom home run and a walk-off double by Adrian Sanchez scoring Carter Kieboom. The final score was 7-6. By the way, Max Scherzer is not a fan of the new 20-second clock. Continue reading

Game #1 of the Grapefruit League schedule debuts the 20 second pitch clock!

The Washington Nationals open up their Grapefruit League schedule tonight with their first game against their sole neighbor in the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches complex. For Nats fans, this is the first game since the Nats season ended rather unceremoniously on September 30, 2018 in Colorado. While Spring Training baseball is more about the process than the results, fans have to temper their expectations because the boxscores should not matter as these small sample sizes are about what players are working on moreso than what happens on the stat sheet.

For those who have been curious about baseball commissioner Rob Manfred’s debut of the 20-second clock, you will see it tonight in this game and throughout spring training. Whether or not these clocks become part of the regular season, the jury is still out on that, but minor leaguers have these clocks in their stadiums in the regular season since 2015. Do they really speed up the games? Yes, but they also change a game that never were timed. That clock will be controlled to begin ticking once the pitcher receives the ball back from the catcher and pitchers will be allowed 20 seconds to begin their wind-up or the motion to come to the set position.

Max Scherzer, who starts tonight’s game, will get the indoctrination to the clock as he is the first pitcher on the mound tonight in what is generally a cavalcade of pitchers in these early spring training games as Scherzer and all pitchers are on strict pitch counts.  Continue reading

The last day of Spring Training before the games begin! #Nats

February 22 Spring Training: Mark Lerner causes a splash about his statements regarding “no contact” with Bryce Harper or Scott Boras in months. Launch the conspiracy theories.

Whatever they were talking about, it probably wasn’t he-who-hasn’t-called-in-months.

The day started with the Circle of Trust as usual. There was a lot of laughter and cheering. Henley wrapped up with a joke. Note that the pitchers always seem to be in the back row, but I think that’s just because they’re generally the tallest group. Continue reading

A day of fundamentals in #Nats camp

February 21, 2019 Report

Apparently I look like I know some stuff. Fans, stadium staff, waiters and others asked me a lot of baseball questions today. (Unfortunately, more than half were about he-who-is-still-not-signed). Continue reading

Live from #Nats Spring Training Camp!

Feb. 20 Spring Training report

As always, the workouts start with a Circle of Trust meeting. This one was complete with some bellowing from Henley—no, I couldn’t make out the words nor could I swear that actual words were involved. Henley is coated in SPF 1000 as always. (I think I figured out why, besides the obvious “skin cancer prevention;” his beard has looked grey for years, so no one will notice as it’s turning grey).

We arrived just as the Circle was starting, so we missed the injury caused by catchers’ batting practice (which happens before everything else). Raudy Read hit a major home run that bounced off the sidewalk and hit a fan in the eye. At least Read signed a ball for him.  I’ll follow up later on the injured guy since he’s friends with a guy from Sec. 314 who’s also down here. Continue reading
