Finally two-in-a-row for the Nats!

Finally, the Nats notched two wins in a row with a solid 5.0 pitching performance from Erick Fedde who had 9 strikeouts to tie his career high. He could have gone longer in this game but his defense made some mistakes behind him that prolonged some innings and ran his pitch count up. The offense came through for 6 runs but not from the usual hitters. Juan Soto and Josh Bell were a combined 0-9 although Soto had a sacrifice fly. Continue reading

Game #12 as the Nats look for the elusive two-in-a-row!

There are times when a team has to show some consistency to get their season righted. The W-L-W-L pattern does not work well when you started below .500. The Washington Nationals have yet to string two consecutive wins together this season, and today would be a fine time to accomplish that small feat. Of course nothing is easy as Luke Weaver is coming off of an outing where he carried a perfect game into the seventh inning. Of course Erick Fedde is coming off of a very good start himself against the Cardinals.  Continue reading

Kyle Schwarber hits a BOMB for the Walk-off in a 1-0 game!

Schwarber walk-off by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

Behind Max Scherzer’s 7.0 inning gem, the Nats offense could not push across a run until the 9th inning in this 0-0 game when Kyle Schwarber unloaded on an 87.8 mph fastball on the inside of the plate that Schwarber turned on and sent into the upper deck concourse above section 238 in rightfield for the dramatic walk-off.

Schwarber’s game winning home run ball traveled at least 463 feet into the dark sky and left Schwarber’s bat at 111.9 mph. Of course that was Schwarber’s first home run with his new team. Continue reading

Game #11 has the Nats facing the Diamondbacks best pitcher, Taylor Widener.

Tonight’s game has the 3-7 struggling Nats against the Diamondbacks and their best pitcher of 2021, Taylor Widener. The right-hander who was destined for the bullpen got his shot when Zac Gallen was injured and in two starts has pitched to a 2.45 ERA. The Nats are 2-2 with their “A” lineup but it is hard to win games when your starters are giving up double-digit runs. The Nats turn to Max Scherzer to right the ship and get the Nats back in the W column. Continue reading

The Big-3 as they call them in D.C. are not pitching to plan!

Washington Nationals photo

In 2019, that trio in the photo were keys to winning a World Series for the Washington Nationals. Now, two seasons removed, those pitchers have been looking like three guys who have lost their way. Their current contracts are costing the team nearly $90 million in payroll just in 2021. In total, their investment by the team is $595 million in just their current contracts. That does not include Strasburg’s previous deal of $111 million that pushes the money over $700 million. The current obligation pays Patrick Corbin through 2024,Stephen Strasburg through 2026, while Max Scherzer is in his final year of his $210 million deal. Continue reading

Game #10 has Patrick Corbin facing a familiar team; It is Jackie Robinson Day!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

On this day, every player and coach will wear No. 42 jerseys. This is Jackie Robinson Day. This will be the first series that will allow up to 25 percent capacity in the stadium under the waivers the D.C. government signed last week with the Washington Nationals. All decks of the stadium are now open for fans. This weekend is a sell-out in this series against the Diamondbacks, however for tonight’s game there are a few hundred tickets available in the upper levels.  Continue reading

Nats win their first series of 2021! Head back to D.C. on a happy flight!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals pitching staff combined for a 6-0 shutout win and more importantly a series win. After last night’s blowout loss, the team showed up this afternoon and dominated in all facets of the game except for baserunning. Joe Ross threw a 6.0 inning gem to add to the 5.0 innings of dominance in Los Angeles to give him 11.0 innings of shutout baseball. Continue reading

Game #9, Nats are going for a series win!

Last night’s meltdown by Stephen Strasburg was hopefully a one-time occurrence and a blip on the radar. Today is a new day as the Washington Nationals close out this series in St. Louis. If the Nats win today, they will notch their first series win of the season.  Continue reading

Game #8 with Strasburg and Davey’s “A” lineup!

There is nothing like a win to change the pessimism to optimism. While the Washington Nationals record is 2-5 for the season, they are 1-0 with their “A” lineup. Tonight in St. Louis, Stephen Strasburg will pitch with Josh Bell, Josh Harrison, and Kyle Schwarber behind him along with Victor Robles, Juan Soto, Starlin Castro and Trea Turner. This was the infield and outfield that manager Dave Martinez envisioned for his 2021 team until COVID decimated his team before Opening Day. Continue reading

Nats off the schneid as they get their starting lineup back and notch the win!

Graphic by Izzy Rendell

The Nats got Josh Bell, Josh Harrison and Kyle Schwarber back from the IL for this game, and each contributed in this 5-2 win. That 5-game losing streak is over. It was Erick Fedde who started the game, and only gave up one run over 4 2/3 innings. Fedde’s fastball was blazing and over 96 mph twice in the game, and he carved through the middle of the Cardinals order in the second inning by striking out the side.  Continue reading
