Game #114 was rained out and now part of a 7-inning doubleheader

The wind came out of the sails on the Washington Nationals, not once, but twice today , as they blew two separate 3-run leads and eventually lost the game in a disappointing 8-7 final at CitiField in Queens, New York. Due to the rain yesterday, the earlier game became part of a day/night doubleheader.  Now it is raining again, and this second game is now in jeopardy of being postponed. Yesterday’s game was suspended in the second inning, and the entire pitching plan has changed.  Continue reading

There are only 50-games remaining in the 2021 season to evaluate players. That is longer than Spring Training which will give the front office staff a good idea as to the players who will fit into their future. Continue reading

Game #112 Corbin closes out this Atlanta series!

TRUIST PARK | Atlanta, Georgia; Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

We saw some promising signs from Patrick Corbin five days ago in his previous start for the Washington Nationals. He had his slider working for 6.0 innings but hit the wall and fell apart when he came out for the seventh inning. Of course, Corbin is still basically a two-pitch hurler and that has been an issue when his slider isn’t biting. When the slider looks like the fastball — until it takes a right turn, Corbin looks like the star from 2019 and previous seasons. It is a devastating swing and miss pitch for opposing batters when the slider is biting. In 2019, Corbin’s slider was rated as the fourth most valuable pitch in baseball. Continue reading

Josiah Gray and the bullpen combined for 15K and Riley Adams powers the Nats to a win!

The Washington Nationals five-game losing streak is over in dramatic fashion as one of the new guys, Riley Adams, in the ninth inning crushed the go-ahead 2-run home run into the upper deck of Truist Park. It turned out to be a game winner as the Nats handed Will Smith a blown save in this one.

Starter Josiah Gray pitched a 10 K beauty in 5.0 innings of work giving up 1 earned run in this one. He had swing and miss stuff working all night. In the end, he induced 20 Braves swing and misses  over his 5.0 innings. Many came on a spiked slider in the dirt and most on his curveball.  Continue reading

Game #111 The Nats have a 5-game losing streak to STOP!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

With a 5-game losing streak that must be stopped, the newly acquired Josiah Gray gets his second start for the Washington Nationals and is tasked with getting his team the W. The Braves have a 4-game winning streak and these are two teams going in different directions this year. That is fine as the Nats made the conscious decision to step back for what GM Mike Rizzo said was to take “two steps forward.” Continue reading

Game #110 has the depleted Nats in Atlanta!

This weekend series in Atlanta for the Washington Nationals has two teams going in opposite directions. The lineups are far different from what we saw on June 3. The Braves added at the trade deadline, and the Nats subtracted from the lineup the Braves saw last. Continue reading

Evaluating the talent for fits in the Nats 2022 roster!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals were a first place team for a small sliver of hope in May, and that turned out to be more of a tease. People who were buying into Fool’s Gold were not seeing the true stones. They were wishing on the second coming of 2019 miracles. This team was stuck in neutral and had to decide to go into reverse or drive. They could have pushed ahead and won the weak NL East by buying early in July at the cost of selling more of their weak farm and patching the weak spots. They wisely sold in late July and started the “retool” as the Nats braintrust shifted into reverse. Continue reading
