Who will the #Nats starting shortstop be on April 4th 2016?

Don’t ask Lou Costello who the Nats shorstop will be on Opening Day as Bud Abbott will tell you “Who” plays 1st base and “Darn” is his shortstop.  We discussed early today what it meant to trade away Yunel Escobar, and it first needed to be said that Rizzo did the right thing as Yunel Escobar developed some range issues and then a pair of ‘alligator arms’ after Andrelton Simmons made that spikes up dangerous slide into Yunel.  After that slide by Simmons, Yunel suffered an injury and after he returned became flinchy when throws came his way.

On the Nats current roster, they have the equivalent of 55 total complete MLB games played at shortstop between the shortstop candidates of Danny Espinosa and Trea Turner. Espi has appeared in 59 games at shortstop and Turner has appeared in 6 games at shortstop with a further note that those games include some partial games played at shortstop with Espi putting in 468 innings and Turner 25 2/3 innings at shortstop. Your 2016 Washington Nationals roster, payroll, projections as of today!

Mike Rizzo wrapped up his last few hours in Nashville to pull off a trade that needed to be done at some point this off-season.  No, not Papelbon, it was Yunel Escobar who was traded from the Nats along with $1.5 million in cash to the Angels for hard throwing reliever Trevor Gott and a low rated 28 year old Minor Leaguer (Mike Brady aka Mr. Brady to those of us old enough to know that reference).

Updated: Front of the bullpen constructed in Nashville. Trevor Gott, Oliver Perez, Shawn Kelley, Yusmeiro Petit.

Many of the GMs and agents have done like Elvis and left the building!  The Winter Meetings are winding down, and Rizzo has made many moves and planted many seeds.

Mike Rizzo didn’t get Darren O’Day as he wasn’t going to sign him for 4 years, but Rizzo did quietly snag Yusmeiro Petit who is one of the most versatile relievers in the game. Petit is rumored to have accepted a 1 year deal at $2.5 million with a team option.  We still don’t know the details and final status of the Shawn Kelley deal.  The high K/9 righty has been an effective stopper in his career.  Oliver Perez based on his stats is either going to be a LOOGY or can also be effective in full innings if he doesn’t pitch in back-to-back games as rest has proved to turn him from a near 6 1/2 ERA to a 2.70 ERA with just a days rest between appearances.

Updated: Rizzo confirms offer to Mike Leake #Nats #WinterMeetings

Mike Rizzo has confirmed that he has extended an offer to Mike Leake who is perhaps the highest rated starter remaining next to his ex-Reds teammate Johnny Cueto.  Leake just turned 28 years old a month ago, and slots as a #3 starter on the Nats and never met the expectations of his high prospect status as the #8 overall pick in the 2009 draft because he wasn’t consistently effective pitching in the pitcher un-friendly Great American “Small Park” in Cincinnati.  Last year Leake had a 0.00 WAR and finished with a 3.70 ERA on the season, but has a career road ERA of 3.48 and was even better in 2015 at 2.91. Rizzo actively talking trades. Mike Leake rumor surfaces! #Nats #WinterMeetings

Mike Leake is one of the most sought after Free Agents still available on the market.  He got his start in 2010 for the Reds while Dusty Baker was his manager. There is no Qualified Offer on Leake and Ken Rosenthal tweeted this:

From Ken Rosenthal: “Sources: #Nationals making push for free-agent RHP Mike Leake. Other clubs also aggressive. Leake played for Dusty Baker with #Reds.”

Dusty Baker did have other things to say in his interviews at the #WinterMeetings

Dusty Baker did have other things to say yesterday at the Winter Meetings, and had a better early evening interview on the MLB Network Radio on Sirius/XM which was much better for Dusty as his old friend Casey Stern who conducted the interview and helped him through some clarifications on the Aroldis Chapman controversy.

After about 5 minutes they got into Dusty’s vision,

Dusty Baker speaks at the #WinterMeetings & makes controversial comments.

It was Dusty Baker’s time at the microphone on Tuesday at the Winter Meetings in Nashville and he left us with more questions than answers.

Dusty got into a little controversy over comments about Aroldis Chapman who is embroiled in a domestic violence controversy.

Q. Dusty, you had Aroldis Chapman when he broke into the majors. What was that process like? Were you surprised by the report?
DUSTY BAKER: I don’t believe reports. Who knows why? I’m not one to judge on how the whole thing happened.

Q. What do you know about the guy?
DUSTY BAKER: Oh, he’s a heck of a guy. I mean, a heck of a guy. I’ll go on record and say I wouldn’t mind having Chapman. No, no, he is a tremendous young man with a great family, mom and dad, and what he went through to get here and what his family had to go through to get here. I was with him through the whole process. There was a couple times when I had to stop him from quitting or going back to Cuba because he was lonely for his family. So I went through a lot of stuff with Chapman. I got nothing but love for the young man.

Q. Were you surprised by — I don’t know how much you read about the allegations.
DUSTY BAKER: I didn’t read it.

Q. Are you surprised that this popped up?
DUSTY BAKER: I don’t read most of the stuff you guys write. No, I don’t.

Q. I believe you. I didn’t know if you heard anything.
DUSTY BAKER: I heard it from my son. I mean, who’s to say the allegations are true, number one. And who’s to say what you would have done or what caused the problem.

Q. Dusty, do you believe that it’s a good thing that baseball now has a domestic policy?
DUSTY BAKER: Yes.

Q. Domestic violence policy?
DUSTY BAKER: Yeah. I think it’s a great thing. I mean, I got a buddy at home that’s being abused by his wife. So I think this policy needs to go further than the player. I think the policy should go to whoever’s involved. Sometimes abusers don’t always have pants on.

I think we need to get them both in a room and try to come up with something. It’s a bad situation. That’s the first thing my momma told me when I was a kid. Don’t hit a woman, even my sister. Man, I was like you better leave me alone before I tell my momma.

It’s a bad situation. I learned that young, but a lot of people maybe didn’t learn that.

The Nats then had Dusty clarify and this was posted:

Winter Meetings heat up quick for Mike Rizzo as he has a player grievance from Papelbon!

IMG_20151207_112605_1

Mike Rizzo was expecting a quiet Sunday check-in at the Gaylord resort in Nashville when he was peppered with questions about a report from Rob Bradford of the Boston press who has a source telling him that Papelbon has filed a grievance for the not getting paid during his suspension for the remaining 4 games of the 2015 season.  The amount is close to $350,000 and if the grievance was filed it would be done through the player’s union.
