Dusty Baker speaks at the #WinterMeetings & makes controversial comments.

It was Dusty Baker’s time at the microphone on Tuesday at the Winter Meetings in Nashville and he left us with more questions than answers.

Dusty got into a little controversy over comments about Aroldis Chapman who is embroiled in a domestic violence controversy.

Q. Dusty, you had Aroldis Chapman when he broke into the majors. What was that process like? Were you surprised by the report?
DUSTY BAKER: I don’t believe reports. Who knows why? I’m not one to judge on how the whole thing happened.

Q. What do you know about the guy?
DUSTY BAKER: Oh, he’s a heck of a guy. I mean, a heck of a guy. I’ll go on record and say I wouldn’t mind having Chapman. No, no, he is a tremendous young man with a great family, mom and dad, and what he went through to get here and what his family had to go through to get here. I was with him through the whole process. There was a couple times when I had to stop him from quitting or going back to Cuba because he was lonely for his family. So I went through a lot of stuff with Chapman. I got nothing but love for the young man.

Q. Were you surprised by — I don’t know how much you read about the allegations.
DUSTY BAKER: I didn’t read it.

Q. Are you surprised that this popped up?
DUSTY BAKER: I don’t read most of the stuff you guys write. No, I don’t.

Q. I believe you. I didn’t know if you heard anything.
DUSTY BAKER: I heard it from my son. I mean, who’s to say the allegations are true, number one. And who’s to say what you would have done or what caused the problem.

Q. Dusty, do you believe that it’s a good thing that baseball now has a domestic policy?
DUSTY BAKER: Yes.

Q. Domestic violence policy?
DUSTY BAKER: Yeah. I think it’s a great thing. I mean, I got a buddy at home that’s being abused by his wife. So I think this policy needs to go further than the player. I think the policy should go to whoever’s involved. Sometimes abusers don’t always have pants on.

I think we need to get them both in a room and try to come up with something. It’s a bad situation. That’s the first thing my momma told me when I was a kid. Don’t hit a woman, even my sister. Man, I was like you better leave me alone before I tell my momma.

It’s a bad situation. I learned that young, but a lot of people maybe didn’t learn that.

The Nats then had Dusty clarify and this was posted:

Mike Rizzo does the Nashville 2-step! #Nats #WinterMeetings

There was breaking news Sunday night that Jonathan Papelbon had filed a grievance against the Nats to receive payment pertaining to his 4 game suspension from the Nats to finish the 2015 season.  This seemed like breaking news as in “current events” because it was to most of us, but Mike Rizzo confirmed he was well aware of this grievance filing and was informed of it before the season ended which means Rizzo has known about this for over 2 months.  The grievance hearing will be heard this Spring.

Rizzo reiterated that this is just business and nothing personal, and further went on to say that as of right now both Papelbon and Storen will be a part of the Nats 2016 bullpen.

Winter Meetings heat up quick for Mike Rizzo as he has a player grievance from Papelbon!

IMG_20151207_112605_1

Mike Rizzo was expecting a quiet Sunday check-in at the Gaylord resort in Nashville when he was peppered with questions about a report from Rob Bradford of the Boston press who has a source telling him that Papelbon has filed a grievance for the not getting paid during his suspension for the remaining 4 games of the 2015 season.  The amount is close to $350,000 and if the grievance was filed it would be done through the player’s union.

Winter Meetings sweep into Nashville tonight!

The Winter Meetings start officially tomorrow, but Rob Manfred is already there and speaking at the annual Winter Meeting Banquet that takes place on the eve of the Winter Meetings. This year, the trades and Free Agent signings didn’t all wait to be crafted at the Winter Meetings.  Different from past years, the Top 3 pitchers have been spoken for already with historic size deals for Zach Greinke and David Price, and a $100+ million deal for Jordan Zimmermann.

On the eve of the meetings at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, rumors are the Reds are loading up for a blockbuster trade as Aroldis Chapman and Todd Frazier are being made available.

So far, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo has been quiet on major moves as so far just making just Free Agent signings but only one has been a Major League deal for Oliver Perez. On Rizzo’s ledger is signing Sean Burnett, Reed Johnson, Chris Heisey and Logan Schafer  to MiLB deals with Spring Training invites. With Oliver Perez added to the 40 man roster, the Nats 40 man sits at 38 players with the additions of Kieboom, Lee and Bostick last month to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. Continue reading

The Day O’Day reminded us of Dollars and Sense #Nats

There are those reminders that sports franchises (not named the Dodgers and Yankees) have to operate with a certain business sense, and shouldn’t spend “stupid” money and move away from organizational philosophies. Some franchises with low payrolls (Orioles) can certainly on occasion spend their money with less discretion, and O’Day appears to be that situation for his acquiring team if earlier reports are correct. It certainly does not mean that teams don’t  regret poor and aggressive decisions in hindsight, just ask the Phillies.

TV Money buys Top Players! Greinke to Arizona! Also, Bryce Harper pulls off the rare Tripleheader!

We all knew Greinke was going to sign this off-season with either the Dodgers or the Giants.  Wrong.  In the shot heard ’round the Majors, it has been reported that Zach Greinke just signed a record baseball contract for 6 years at a total contract of $206,500,000 with the Diamondbacks of Arizona and that is not a misprint. The annual amount of that deal before deferrals is $34.4 million per year! http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ap-source-zack-greinke-diamondbacks-reach-6-deal-015320122–mlb.html

You wonder how the Diamondbacks all of a sudden can pull this type of deal off and outbid both the Dodgers and the Giants.  Simple, RSN (Regional Sports Network) money kicks in for the 2016 season under their new FOX deal they signed earlier this year for Arizona. The deal believed to be worth $1.5 billion plus an equity share in the network over 20 years averages to over $75 million a year and some estimates believe with a profit share could be closer to $100 million a year.

Updated 2016 #Nats Payroll Projections. 40 man roster at 37. Winter Meetings days away!

Let’s update the Nats payroll now that we have passed the arbitration tender deadline. The Nats 2015 payroll moved the team into the upper echelon with the big spenders breaking into a figure firmly in the Top 1/2 Dozen for Opening Day 2015.  The Nats Opening Day payroll was #6 according to Sports Illustrated’s calculation of Opening Day payrolls at $162,014,559.  The 2016 Opening Day payroll budget for the Nats is almost certainly known by Mike Rizzo at this time; however, without the MASN settlement for RSN rights, don’t expect the payroll to far exceed 2015’s $162 million figure.

Updated: Stammen non-tendered. What’s next for #Nats

Mike Rizzo doesn’t get much rest this time of year, and in a strategic decision non-tendered Craig Stammen as we thought may happen in our comments section 3 days ago based on Gonat’s thoughts that it might happen.

Wednesday was the Tender/Non-Tender deadline for arbitration eligible players. The Nats began the off-season with 9 arbitration eligible players and DFA’d reliever David Carpenter which reduced the Nats eligibles to just 8 players.

Rizzo was able to negotiate contracts for Tyler Moore at $900,000 and José Lobaton for just over $1.38 million. Both deals were slightly below the MLBTR and TalkNats estimates.

Here are the remaining 5 arbitration eligible players who were all tendered contracts for which the Nats will try to work out contracts prior to the arbitration deadline. Continue reading

Drew Storen – The Good, the Bad & the incredibly Ugly

One of the recurring issues that comes up on many of our discussions is the bullpen, and specifically Papelbon and Storen.  There are lots of opinions about both of them.

As both a fan (and fans, by definition, are not necessarily objective) and as someone who has spent his career dealing with data, I thought it would be interesting to list the details of each of Storen’s appearances since he was demoted to the 8th inning. So here is a game by game recap from the Game Day data. Continue reading
