On Sunday, the Nationals will once again host their FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches neighbor Houston Astros in a game where Anibal Sanchez and Gerrit Cole will face-off. With manager Dave Martinez inserting in Stephen Strasburg into yesterday’s game in front of Patrick Corbin who pitches today, it would appear the rotation ordering is set. Here is what the order now looks like 1. Max Scherzer 2. Strasburg 3. Corbin 4. Anibal Sanchez 5. Jeremy Hellickson. The more complicated question would be who catches each pitcher? It is often said that life imitates art. Actually, it’s the other way around. But, the idea that what we witness on a daily basis can be captured in just a few hundred pages of writing or a few hours of film is strongly on-point. The long and exhausting Bryce Harper Free Agency saga has come mercifully to a climax. The cases for enticing him to stay or shooing him to the ether were made forcefully and often. For whatever reasons one follows baseball the fact remains that few pursuits find such a breadth and span of human and systemic characteristics. On full display are frailties and ambition steeped in a brew of boiling unbridled capitalism. It is full of humble hail fellows well met and hopelessly vainglorious divas. A complete spectrum of personalities resides between the two poles. There was never any doubt about Bryce, however. “Diva” always felt inadequate in describing him. It just was never strong enough a descriptor of his visible and obvious self-absorption.
As the calendar turns from February to March, we are down to three Washington Nationals players who have not appeared in big league games, and they are Stephen Strasburg, Justin Miller, and Ryan Zimmerman. We know where Strasburg and Zimmerman have been, but where is Justin Miller? While Strasburg pitched over the weekend on the Minor League side, he is scheduled to pitch today on the Major League side for his 2019 debut. Is today the day for Ryan Zimmerman? That is the 18 million dollar question.
UPDATED: Zimmerman is not in the lineup but reportedly is working out at the team’s facility at West Palm Beach.

Bryce Harper has signed with the Phillies. We all knew that Bryce Harper would sign a long-term contract before the season started. Some thought it would take this long while others who were polled thought he would sign much sooner in the off-season. As many theorized, Harper would strategically wait for Manny Machado to sign to see what deal he received, but by doing so one more team came off of Harper’s list of teams that were courting him. The list came down to the Nats, Phillies, White Sox, and Giants after the Padres snagged Machado then the final list was the Dodgers, Giants and Phillies. There were always rumors of mystery teams. The Washington Nationals have one of those “rise and shine” early morning bus rides to a Spring Training game. This time it is clear across the Everglades to the Gulf Coast of Florida in Ft. Myers, Florida to face the World Champion Boston Red Sox. Yesterday the Nationals faced the Houston Astros so they will have faced the last two World Series champs in back-to-back days. The Nats bus will leave around 7 am for the 128 mile ride that will take about 2 ½ hours. Does that sound familiar? The Nats just made a ride like that to Disney World to face the Braves. Every projected player for the Washington Nationals opening day roster has played in a Spring Training game except for Ryan Zimmerman, Justin Miller, Stephen Strasburg, and Jeremy Hellickson. While Hellickson and Strasburg have pitched on the Minor League side, Zimmerman has been working out on his own, but manager Dave Martinez has promised that Zimmerman will start today along with Hellickson while Strasburg will start on Friday in Jupiter against the Marlins. That just leaves Justin Miller with an unknown status. UPDATED: Zimmerman was scratched and reported sick. Continue reading →
As you’ve probably heard by now, the Nationals MASN broadcasts are set to look quite different for the 2019 season. On-field reporter Dan Kolko has been promoted to the host of pre- and post-game coverage (you go, Kolko), and is being joined by former Nats third base coach Bo Porter. Replacing Dan for on-field duties is DC native Alex Chappell, and she is excited about this new opportunity.
As the daughter of minor league left-handed pitcher Phil Corddry (he played in the Red Sox farm system from 1969-1972), Alex grew up a baseball fan in the D.C. suburbs in Bethesda, Maryland, and she’s been a Nats fan from the beginning.
“I’ll never forget going to a game with my dad in 2004 when the O’s were playing the Expos [in Spring Training], and he said ‘hey, that’s the team that’s going to come to DC,’” she said. “And I just became a big Nats fan. It was so great that we finally had baseball back in DC.”
She attended the University of Alabama, where she jumped head first into covering sports almost as soon as she arrived on campus.
“I signed up for the campus radio station, and they had an opening in sports, and I started covering their football team,” she said. “I immersed myself in covering football, and fell in love with getting to cover the team on the sidelines.” Continue reading →
