It was a 1-run game in the 7th inning then the Nats bullpen happened. Nats lose 14-6

It is hard to believe that this was a 1-run game entering the top of the 8th inning before the Nats bullpen imploded — again — and allowed a winnable game to slip away quickly. The bullpen gave up 5 home runs in this game in just 3.0 innings of work. Max Scherzer certainly was not his sharpest but he only gave up 3-runs over 6 innings, and his offense had numerous opportunities to get ahead in the game. Emphasis on the word “numerous”. To add to the misery, two more Nats player went down in an insult to injury as the team saw Victor Robles get plunked on his wrist by Cubs starter Cole Hamels, and Robles headed to the x-ray room, and in addition, reliever Justin Miller (rotator cuff strain) exited after surrendering a 2-run home run and wincing in pain. The Nationals bullpen ERA ballooned to 6.82 after this disastrous game as they gave up 11-runs in their 3.0 innings of work. Continue reading

Game #44 is ScherzDay and TreaDay — but can it be TGIF?

After 39-games on the IL, Trea Turner returns to the Nationals and joins his teammates to create what is nearly the lineup that manager Dave Martinez envisioned. Maybe this current roster is better in some ways with the addition of Gerardo Parra, but this team really-really needs the struggling players like Juan Soto, Yan Gomes and Brian Dozier to step it up. Parra blasts the Nats to a victory and a series win!

The Nats won a series and a big game this afternoon on the back of Gerardo Parra who was a triple shy of hitting for a cycle on a perfect batting day. The Nats bullpen had to go into overtime after Anibal Sanchez pulled his hamstring and exited the game in the middle of the second inning. Continue reading

Game #43 Anibal Sanchez is called on for the series win!

When Mets killer Daniel Murphy departed D.C., the Washington Nationals needed a replacement to torment the Mets, and the rookie Victor Robles has stepped up admirably to be that role. Robles has 4 of his 8 home runs against the Mets, and he is batting .357. Last night, Robles had the rare feat of combining a bunt single with a home run in a game. In the 7th inning, Mets reliever Tyler Bashlor seemed to deliberately buzz Robles’ tower with an up-and-in pitch. The dangerous pitch sent the 21 year old spinning out of the way of a head shot and onto the dirt. Continue reading

Corbin adds another gem to his record. Nats win 5-1!

Photo by Navy Yard Nats for TalkNats

The difference a day makes. With Patrick Corbin on the mound, the Nationals return to the win column in a game they dominated right from the start with a 3-run first inning. The 29,673 fans in attendance were treated to a Trea Turner bobblehead and a spirited Nats win. Corbin went 8.0 inning giving up just one run on 4 hits with 11 strikeouts on 108 pitches. All nine of the Nationals hits were accumulated in the 1-5 spots in the batting order with Victor Robles and Howie Kendrick getting two hits each and Anthony Rendon with a trio of hits.  Continue reading

Game #42 on Trea Turner bobblehead night and good weather!

Trea Turner‘s walk-off against the Mets on March 31, 2019

The season is now 25% over, but don’t fret as there is plenty of baseball ahead — and we will hope for good baseball. When a team is playing poorly, a good bobblehead will get the crowd out. Tonight is the Trea Turner bobblehead night and while Trea is not expected to play tonight for the Nationals  — he is getting close to returning in a few days. Trea’s wife, Kristen Turner, will be at Section 138 tonight selling raffle tickets for the benefit of the Jimmy V. Foundation charity. Stop by and say hi to Kristen and maybe she will autograph your Trea Turner bobblehead if you buy enough raffle tickets.  Continue reading

This look (see pic) says it all for the #Nats

Wilmer Difo after his gaffe, and a picture says 1,000 words.

The game started off with an ominous sign when shortstop Wilmer Difo could not make a good throw on a tailor-made doubleplay to end the first inning. Taking advantage of the Nats gaffe, the Mets put two more baserunners on for Wilson Ramos who swung at a ball under the zone for a grand slam that slammed the door on the Nats tonight in the first inning. The team only got 2-runs back after being no-hit for 5 innings, and the team fell 9 games below .500 with this 6-2 loss. There were few positives in the game besides Victor Robles 2-run home run.  Continue reading

Game #41 Mets are back in D.C.

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

The Nationals are back home after a three-city road trip, and they have Juan Soto and Gerardo Parra with them. Soto returned from the 10-day IL over the weekend and Parra was signed as a free agent after he was DFA’d by the Giants. While the team still has several players on the 10-day IL, it is Trea Turner who this team needs to get back to where they had hoped to be. Turner is expected back next week after recovering from a broken finger. The last time these two teams met in Nationals Park, it was Trea Turner who stroked the walk-off home run to get the team’s first win.  Continue reading

The Dodgers series was one-step forward and one-step backwards for the #Nats

It was all smiles during Spring Training

The season will be 25% complete during tomorrow’s game in the third inning. The Nationals played .500 baseball in Los Angeles winning two and losing two which was better than the Country Line Dance they were doing of one-step forward and two-steps backwards; however, days are clicking off the calendar with 122 more games looking forward and playing .500 baseball just is not good enough going forward.

This team has to take two or three steps forward at a time and go on a long winning streak. The Nationals are 16-24 which is the same record that Los Angeles team had last year on their way to a back-to-back World Series appearance which shows it is possible — but it is feeling improbable based on playing .500 baseball or below. In order to move forward, the Nationals need a long winning streak. The Dodgers entered the season last year without Justin Turner who was injured. His first game back was on May 15th of 2018 and the team went 63-40 after Turner returned and won the NL West with a 92-71 record.  Continue reading

A tour of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (www.nlbm.com)

All baseball fans should visit this museum at least once in their life.  Like Cooperstown, this museum covers the history of baseball — except this museum covers the history of the stream of talent that finally began merging with the Major Leagues when Jackie Robinson took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
