The stars were shining bright as Turner, Soto, Schwarber all earn first All-Stars!

2021 highlights in Topps Now cards

Count them: Three
Should be: Five

There were three Washington Nationals stars who will don that modified Curly W gear in Colorado for this year’s installment of the All-Star game. Writer, Ken Rosenthal, made a case for three Nats also in the mid-summer classic, and he had Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Max Scherzer as his three, but the final reveal did not call Scherzer’s name. Snubbery? Juan Soto did make it, and joins the Nats trio of first-time picks with Turner and Schwarber. Continue reading

Game #82 Joe Ross takes on the role of the stopper!

Mathematically we are now in the second half of the season, and the Washington Nationals need players to step up. Yesterday, it was Yan Gomes who raised his hand and accounted for all of the Nats runs. Mistakes were aplenty yesterday and a winnable game was kicked to the curb by too many miscues and non-plays — not all of them showed up on the boxscore. But once again, managerial and front office decisions are coming into play when the margin for error is razor thin. These “split-squad” depleted lineups are painful to watch.  Continue reading

Game #81 the halfway point in the season for the Nats!

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals come into this mid-point game in the season with a 40-40 record. Considering where this team began, you would have taken this a month ago when the Nats were 9-games under .500. Now they have to hover near or above the .500 mark to stay in contention and get healthy.  Continue reading

Knocked to the canvas, can the Nats get back up?

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

There are so many sports clichés that we could use at a time like this, but the reality of the situation is the sum of all fears were reached yesterday. The Washington Nationals lost their two best position players to injuries this week, and most of the original depth behind them are injured. It got so dire that catcher Alex Avila had to play second base for the first time in his career. Continue reading

Game #80 Max Scherzer needs to start a new winning streak!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals are literally limping into this series against the Dodgers, and the timing could not be worse considering the Dodgers are back to full strength in regards to their health. Not only are the Nats missing four key bullpen pieces on the IL, Trea Turner will miss another game with a jammed finger, and Jordy Mercer was moved to the 10-day IL and replaced by journeyman Humberto ArteagaContinue reading

Who will be the emergency infielder?

Trea Turner has emerged as a leader and a mentor as he was seen discussing strategy with the young Luis Garcia; Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Nationals need an emergency middle-infielder, and they need one soon. Usually the protocol for having both of your shortstops injured would be to call up someone from the minors, unfortunately for the Nats, their two most MLB ready call ups in Luis Garcia and Carter Kieboom are both injured. Long-time utilityman Adrian Sanchez is also hurt. Even dipping into Double-A ball yields an injured Jackson Cluff. Every middle infielder in the Nationals’ minor league system is hurt and/or not on the 40-Man roster. Of the healthy candidates not on the 40-man, nearly all of them are too young and inexperienced to make any significant impact at the Major-League level. Thus the solution for last night’s rain-shortened affair was to simply wing it, and trust in veteran catcher Alex Avila’s experience to guide him through his first appearance in the middle of the infield. Game #79 the depleted Nats are depleted even more!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The injury bug has struck the Washington Nationals even harder as the team us without Trea Turner (finger) and Jordy Mercer (leg) and Alex Avila will start at second base in an infield shuffle to move Starlin Castro to shortstop and Josh Harrison to third base. Continue reading

Trea Turner got a new cycle on his birthday to tie for the most in MLB history!

The triple makes this cycle official! Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals are at a season high two games over .500, and that came from a win in a game that did not start well — but it sure finished well with a Nats 15-6 blowout win over the Tampa Bay Rays in a sweep of this two-game series. The star of this game was the birthday boy, Trea Turner, who hit for his third career cycle which tied an MLB record. It was Jon Lester who started this game, and the only reason he earned the W was because his offense out-slugged the Rays. Lester gave up five runs, and lasted the required five innings to qualify for the win. Continue reading
