Strasburg comes back strong and Josh Bell and Kyle Schwarber ignite the offense!

The Washington Nationals got a 5 1/3 inning, zero run outing, from Stephen Strasburg who returned from the IL to put the Nats in the winner’s circle. Of course the 9th inning with a 4-run lead wasn’t enough to have the game out of reach from drama as closer Brad Hand gave up two runs to close out the win by a final score of 4-2 over the Orioles. It was the bats of Josh Bell and Kyle Schwarber who paced this win. Bell arguably had his best game of the season with 3-hits and an RBI. Continue reading

Game #41 Nats are hoping it is home sweet home with Strasburg!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals are back home and further behind than before they headed on their road trip through Arizona and Chicago. The team is at 17-23 and their competitor they are facing this weekend stands at 17-26. Baseball has not been kind on the east coast south of New York City except for those two teams playing in the Tampa area.

Manager Dave Martinez announced last night that Stephen Strasburg will be activated today and will start today’s game. The team will have to make a corresponding move to add Strasburg to the active roster. With both Paolo Espino and Kyle McGowin temporarily on the roster due to the COVID-IL moves for Erick Fedde and Tanner Rainey, the Nats could just send either Espino or McGowin back to Triple-A.  Continue reading

Game #40 on Juan Soto’s MLB debut anniversary day!

Photo by Craig Nedrow for TalkNats

Three years ago, Juan Soto stepped onto the big stage for his MLB debut in his Washington Nationals uniform at 19 years of age . It was more than most of us expected, and now he is a bona fide superstar. The only thing standing in the way of Soto and sustained greatness is his health. Last night he smashed his first home run in a dozen days, but he has only hit two home runs in the past 40 days, mostly because of his health and getting his timing back.  Continue reading

Nats win a 4-3 nailbiter on ScherzDay! Davey ejected from this one!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

There are few easy wins. When you watch sports long enough, you know that. This game between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs tested your blood pressure on both sides. In the end, it was the Nats who came across in this one victorious by a single run with a final score of 4-3, and the game was filled with its share of drama. This was another competitive start by Max Scherzer who only lasted five innings as he departed with a 4-2 lead, and he escaped a bases loaded mess of his own. Scherzer entrusted his bullpen with the final outcome. Continue reading

Game #39 Lineups were delayed due to positive COVID test

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

Starting lineups were released about thirty minutes before first pitch due to a positive COVID test in the pitching ranks. Both Erick Fedde and Tanner Rainey were placed on the COVID IL list. One of them tested positive, and one was identified as being in close contact. The player who tested positive feels fine according to Nats’ manager Dave Martinez who said the player was vaccinated; however the other player was not vaccinated. The team called up both Kyle McGowin and Paolo Espino from the taxi squad. Continue reading

Where do the #Nats go from here?

Ryan Zimmerman was ready; Kyle Schwarber took care of business! Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

There was optimism at the end of April into the start of May when the Washington Nationals were in first place from May 1st to May 3rd. The starting pitching had been on point from April 28th until this current turn in the rotation that included failures by Joe Ross and Jon Lester. Finally, manager Dave Martinez showed a quick hook yesterday with Corbin at 5.0 innings in a tie game at 3-3, then the relievers gave up 3-runs in three innings and the offense shut off. It is a pattern of the lack of team balance, and seemingly waving the white flag too early that has pushed the Nats to a season’s worst at 6.0 games under .500 at 16-22.  Continue reading

Game #38 Corbin in Wrigley; Schwarber has his Twix!

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

In the pre-game, Kyle Schwarber had his Twix bar, and Patrick Corbin was reinstated from the paternity list with Paolo Espino optioned back to Triple-A. You’re all caught up on the pre-game news unless you want to hear about Stephen Strasburg‘s bullpen side session. Continue reading

Game #37 Jon Lester is back in Wrigley Field; His story is kind of incredible!

When you’re playing against Jon Lester, you probably don’t like him. His teammates love him. He has three World Series rings, and he wants more. The Cubs were willing to let him go once his contract ran its course after six years. It cost the Cubs $10 million to part ways with him as they bought out the remaining option on his deal. The Washington Nationals pounced on him in what could be one of the best signings of 2021.

His value to that Cubs’ franchise changed baseball history in 2016 and years of bad luck. His 1-0 gem to start the 2016 NLDS against the San Francisco Giants changed the course of history. The Giants had that “even year” thing going with three World Series wins in 2010, 2012, and 2014. If Lester did not dominate that game one of the 2016 NLDS, the Cubs might have lost in that series and that World Series could have had another name on the rings.  Continue reading

Nats shutout the D’Backs behind a Fedde gem!

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals needed Erick Fedde to pitch well, and he did better than well with a 7.0 inning gem with only giving up 3 hits and no runs. The Nats win this one 3-0 and head on a happy flight to Chicago.

It took an 8th inning pinch-hit home run from Yadiel Hernandez to put the Nats up, and Daniel Hudson and Brad Hand out of the bullpen secured the win. Continue reading

Game #36 has the season’s finale with Arizona

Erick Fedde; Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals have a series to win today against a team they should be dominating. This getaway game has Erick Fedde starting for the Nats on the same day that Stephen Strasburg had a tune-up rehab start for the Rochester Red Wings Triple-A team, and he threw a 4 1/3 inning shutout with six strikeouts on 75 pitches. Fedde has to show that he deserves to stay in the starting rotation as general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez have a decision to make.  Continue reading
