Game #10 The Nats are back in Jupiter with Gore

Photo by DC Connoisseur for TalkNats

After a big league day-off for the Washington Nationals, they are back at it again today. This time in Jupiter, Florida against the Miami Marlins. Yesterday was the start to the Minor Leaguers games against other teams in their Spring Training.  Many players have departed for the World Baseball Classic leaving us with a “new look” roster, and new opportunities for those still in West Palm Beach. Game #9 has Corbin for his second Grapefruit start!

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

The 3-4-1 Washington Nationals have the pitching conundrum on the mound in the form of Patrick Corbin. While he was one of the aces of the 2019 World Series team, his 2020-2022 record has been the opposite of an ace. More like a player taking up space on a $140 million contract with two years remaining.  Continue reading

Game #8 of Spring Training to see what Josiah Gray again!

Photo by Andy Ward for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals enter this Grapefruit League game at .500 with a 3-3-1 record, and we only wish that Spring Training records could be indicative of what the regular season’s record would be. The Nats would certainly take a .500 record for the 2023 regular season at 81-81. It might be a baseball miracle. But let’s stop dreaming, and talk about today’s game. Josiah Gray makes his second start of the season. There is no TV and probably no Statcast available to see or chart what Gray is throwing. His last start was all of nine pitches in a one-inning performance with no runs. What he was throwing in that start was a bit of a mystery. Cutters or sliders? Continue reading

Game #6 MacKenzie Gore for at least 2 innings in Spring Training!

Photo by DC Connoisseur for TalkNats

Maybe yesterday’s game, with multiple pitching changes during innings, will be more indicative of the length of a real baseball game at 2 hours and 30 minutes. Maybe ESPN slowed things down a little. Or maybe it was the injury timeouts. Starting pitcher Cory Abbott was nailed by a 112 mph shot off of his leg from Giancarlo Stanton then there were three HBPs on Washington Nationals’ batters, and a pulled hammy by Derek Hill that could end his spring. All-in-all, the Nats left Tampa with lots of bumps and bruises as well as Gerardo Carrillo‘s bruised ego after he surrendered a walk-off two-run homer to career minor leaguer, Carlos Narvaez, who has never played above High-A ball. On one-pitch, it’s the highs and lows of baseball. Continue reading

Game #5 of Spring Training is set in Tampa!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

We have Washington Nationals baseball today on national TV. Thanks to Aaron Judge and the Yankees for getting ESPN to cover this game. In the NYC area, the YES Network will provide TV for the home team today in Tampa. These two teams will meet again at the end of March at Nationals Park to wrap up the preseason in an exhibition game two days prior to Opening Day. Recently, Steve Phillips of MLB Network Radio compared Nats’ top prospect James Wood to Judge. Well, today they will both be on the same field and maybe even taking a photo together. Come to think of it, Jim Bowden comp’d Wood to Giancarlo Stanton, and he’s playing for the Yankees in this game also.
