Game #42 Finale with the White Sox

The Washington Nationals split yesterday’s doubleheader, and today have the finale with the White Sox in Chicago. Today is a key game for the Nats with a tough weekend series lined up against the Phillies. With a goal to win series, the Nats have that within reach to take the rubber game in this match.

Today’s matchup is the lefties of Patrick Corbin and Garrett Crochet. Manager Dave Martinez has all batters going from the right-handers batting box to start the game. Nasim Nunez will get his second start today at shortstop.

After the game, the Nationals head to Philadelphia with a day-off tomorrow.

With plans to get Josiah Gray back into a rehab assignment, you have to wonder if he can make it back in the month of May. Here’s what we think the schedule could look like going forward:

  1. Wednesday: Patrick Corbin vs. White Sox
  2. Thursday: Day-off May 16
  3. Friday: Jake Irvin vs. Phillies
  4. Saturday: MacKenzie Gore vs. Phillies
  5. Sunday: Trevor Williams vs. Phillies
  6. Monday: Mitchell Parker vs. Twins
  7. Tuesday: Corbin vs. Twins
  8. Wednesday: Irvin vs. Twins
  9. Thursday: Day-off May 23
  10. Friday: Gore vs. Mariners
  11. Saturday: Williams vs. Mariners
  12. Sunday: Parker vs. Mariners
  13. Monday: Corbin vs. Atlanta
  14. Tuesday: Irvin vs. Atlanta
  15. Wednesday: Gore vs. Atlanta
  16. Thursday: Williams vs. Atlanta

Your top Washington Nationals on the FanGraphs’ WAR leaderboard has CJ Abrams, Trevor Williams, and MacKenzie Gore at the top at a +1.1. In total, 21 Nats’ players are in positive WAR and another six at a neutral 0.0 WAR.

“I thought he threw the ball really well. He mixed all his pitches up. The biggest thing was his misses were around the zone. When you can do that, you get guys to really start swinging the bat and chasing. I thought he did a good job of that.”

— manager Dave Martinez said yesterday about Erick Fedde

The Nats starting pitchers have a combined ERA of 3.99 and 14th in MLB. The Nats are now 7 points from 13th best in baseball. The team has been slowly moving up in the rankings it seems week by week. At this point in the season, the ERA movement is in smaller increments due to the total innings increasing over the 200 inning mark. In the old-days that was a good workload for one starter in a season. Remember, that ERA includes two games of Gray and his 14.04 ERA.

Here is how they rank:

No. 5 Starter: Patrick Corbin 5.91
No. 4 Starter: Jake Irvin 3.72
No. 3 Starter: MacKenzie Gore 3.38
No. 2 Starter: Mitchell Parker 3.09
No. 1 Starter: Trevor Williams 1.94
