Game #103 Four games in Queens, NY

The Washington Nationals have exactly 60 games remaining in this 2023 season. If they were a playoff team — it would be a sprint to the finish. They are not — the Nats are playing for respectability, and it is not a sprint, rather a spring forward towards a brighter future. The team put itself on a 69-win pace after a 5-1 successful homestand.

This is going to be a tough series against a Mets’ team that is fighting for their roster to stay intact before the trading deadline as they are at 47-54 and 7.5 games out of a Wild Card spot — but they would have to leapfrog five teams to get there, and they should probably sell before the deadline. If the Nats dominate this series, the Mets might throw in the towel. This could get real interesting.

The Nats have Josiah Gray on the mound tonight, and this comes on a night with a light MLB schedule. There are only three games being played, and this will be the national game on MLB Network out-of-market.

The Nats starting pitchers have a combined ERA of 4.63 for 19th best in MLB. The Nats are within 15 points of leapfrogging three teams for 16th best — which is the spot the Mets hold.

Here is how they rank:

No. 5 Starter: Patrick Corbin 5.01
No. 4 Starter: Jake Irvin 4.96
No. 3 Starter: Trevor Williams 4.47
No. 2 Starter: MacKenzie Gore 4.37
