Jayson Werth and Anthony Rendon were the big bats for the Nats to bail out Gio Gonzalez who left the game in the 6th with 2 men on and no outs in a 7-4 game. Dusty Baker went to Matt Belisle who was ready in the bullpen at the start of the inning, and Belisle got the doubleplay ball for a 6-4-3 tailor-made doubleplay for what Jayson Werth called the biggest play of the game.
Jayson Werth blasted a 3-run HR in the 2nd inning to put the Nats ahead 4-1. Gio Gonzalez unfortunately gave back the 3 run lead in the 3rd inning and ran his pitch count up. Gio settled down in the 4th and 5th, and in the bottom of the 5th inning the Nats got a lead-off double by Trea Turner followed by a Jayson Werth walk. Daniel Murphy hit a ball to the warning track that Almonte turned his back to and the ball hit the back of Almonte’s glove for a double which scored Turner. With runner’s on 3rd and 2nd base, Anthony Rendon ripped a ball down the 3rd base line for another double plating the final 2 runs of the game. Continue reading
This afternoon’s game will be the final regular meeting of these two teams as part of their season 4-game series with the Cleveland Indians as Gio Gonzalez and Josh Tomlin will face each other. The Nationals need to win this one to even their season series at 2 wins each.
Gonzalez faced the Indians in July while giving up two runs in 6 1/3 innings of work that day and will face a slightly different line-up today without the designated hitter. Continue reading
Trevor Bauer did not have no-hitter stuff, but he had shutout stuff. Max Scherzer on the other hand went into the 7th inning with great stuff, and had some great defense behind him until a Lindor single broke up the no-hitter. With Lindor on 1st base, Scherzer tried to pick him off and threw an errant pick-off throw and Lindor scampered to 3rd base and eventually scored.
The Nationals couldn’t piece together consecutive hits, and the only Nats run scored was a Jayson Werth home run off of Andrew Miller. Ben Revere had a double and a single off of Bauer and was only one of three Nats players who had faced Bauer before. Continue reading
The Cleveland Indians hoped to begin August with Jonathan Lucroy as their catcher and Andrew Miller as their closer. They did not get Lucroy who vetoed the trade, and the only big need the Indians filled was for the back of their bullpen with Miller. Since then, Danny Salazar was placed on the DL. Like the Indians, the Nationals added a coveted back of the bullpen arm in Mark Melancon by the end of the trade deadline.
The Cleveland Indians enter today’s game up by 2.5 games over the Detroit Tigers for 1st place in the AL Central division, and find themselves with a 5-5 record in their last 10 games. The Nationals played two games in July against the Indians and split the two-game series. Continue reading
This past Saturday was the Nats Fan Appreciation Day and more than a few Talk Nats writers, readers and commenters attended.
Lots of questions were asked and answered. But in such an environment, can you expect more than the typical cliché answers? As a result, the suggestion was made to the collective of the Talk Nats writers who write the most, to take advantage of two off-days and have a post on Monday (the first off-day this week) where we asked you to comment on what questions would you most like to asked Dusty Baker and Mike Rizzo – assuming that they were connected to a lie detector. Then we would take the most popular questions (based on up-votes) and have two polls on Thursday (the second off-day) where you could vote for the one question to ask: one poll for the Baker question; and one for the Rizzo question. “Playoff type of atmosphere,” said Charlie Slowes just before Mark Melancon struck out the Giants’ final batter Hunter Pence for a 1-0 win for the Nats. With that, Mark Melancon is 1-for-1 in save opportunities for the Nats.
On this day, Tanner Roark took the mound in a familiar spot for another start after a Nats loss. Roark, in his own right, has been one of the best starting pitchers in the Majors, and arguably would be facing the best pitcher in the Majors in Madison Bumgarner considering Clayton Kershaw is currently on the DL. We recently upgraded our comment system to improve reliability, performance, and long-term control, and we’re currently running both systems during the transition. This shift moves us away from an external service to a system we run and control directly—meaning we own the content and can continue improving it over time. We’ve also reduced the comment refresh delay from about 30 seconds to 10 seconds, making it much closer to real-time.
We understand there have been frustrations and increased feedback, and we’re actively working to improve things. What we ask is simple: use the system and give it a fair shot. If you run into issues, please submit them through the support form so we can track and fix them properly. Repeated complaints without details don’t help us solve problems—we appreciate your patience as we continue refining the experience.
