#Nats win 7-6 and survive 6 unanswered runs by the Phillies

The Washington Nationals improve to 3-1, and this game they held on to win 7-6 as Max Scherzer got the win and Koda Glover the well earned Hold and Blake Treinen survived the 9th inning after pitching in his third straight game. Max Scherzer was great until he hit the wall to begin the 7th inning after walking the first two batters, but lasted 6 2/3 while giving up 2-runs on only 4 hits with those 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.

The offensive stars were Jayson Werth who got the game winning RBIs with a 3-run HR, Daniel Murphy had a 2-run HR, and Bryce Harper also had a 2-run HR. Dusty did bat Eaton-Harper-Murphy together in the batting order, and they collectively went 3-for-3 with 2 walks against the Phillies left-handed reliever. Every starter and pinch-hitter recorded a hit today except for Trea Turner, and it is not time to panic. Trea Turner did not forget how to hit. Continue reading

Game #4: It’s Opening Day in Philadelphia; Max Scherzer and Vince Velasquez square off

It is Opening Day in the City of Brotherly Love which always seems ironic for a city that will boo their own players for the slightest infractions. The Nationals play the Phillies this weekend in a three-game series with Max Scherzer getting the start, and you can expect Jayson Werth will receive his normal jeers from the crowd.

This is a new-look Phillies team as they have really turned over their roster, and there is no longer any of the heroes from the World Series team that Jayson Werth played for in 2008 or even their last playoff team from the 2011 season. Ryan Howard was the last remaining player, and he was released after the season. Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley have been gone for a while now. Speaking of booing, Ryan Howard heard the boos often in 2016, and he has moved on to the Braves organization on a Minor League deal as was reported yesterday. According to Statistica.com, the Phillies are tied for the 7th youngest team in MLB, and they probably got more notoriety for Pete Mackanin‘s final roster by adding 27-year-old Brock Stassi who cried after being told he made his first MLB roster. You will recognize several players from last year’s roster, and some of the newbies who added the aare Howie Kendrick, Daniel Nava, Clay Buckholz, Pat Neshek and Joaquin Benoit. Those are the players that really boosted the Phillies average age and nudged up the payroll. Continue reading

Nats win 2-of-3 of the opening series; lose the finale in the bullpen

The Nationals lose a tough game in 10 innings. The Nationals were 1-for-9 with runners-in-scoring-position tonight in a game delayed by two rain storms, but the Nationals still held a 2-0 lead into the 8th inning. Gio Gonzalez went 6 innings of shutout baseball and got big plays when he needed it as he did not have a clean inning.

Here is what the pitcher’s box score looked like:

“You have to give those guys credit as they hit the best of our bullpen,” Dusty Baker said after the game. “I love my bullpen. They are going to be one of the best if they are not already.”

Kevin Nibley and Bryan King had perfect timing to cover the bullpen on the Talk Nats Podcast as they interviewed former Nats catcher Wil Nieves and pitcher Mike O’Connor and Sammy Solis‘ sisters. The link to the Podcast is here. Continue reading

Roark rebounds; Ball bounces right for #Nats; Defense solid again!

Tanner Roark struggled through the first inning giving up 2-runs, but then followed that with 5 innings of shutout baseball en route to earning the win while running his pitch count to 97 pitches tonight in 6 full innings. The Nationals finished off the Marlins to win 6-4 as Blake Treinen earned the Save, and Holds by Joe Blanton and Oliver Perez.

The hitting star is debatable as Matt Wieters‘ statline looked great going 3-3 and Jayson Werth got 2-hits but each got a gift wrapped hit, and you take those any way you can get them. Adam Eaton scored 2 runs and had a double and a walk, and Bryce had two hits as well as Daniel Murphy, and Ryan Zimmerman opened the scoring with an oppo home run. Continue reading
