Nats had plenty of chances and squandered what the game gave them

In this 3-to-0 loss, the Nationals had their chances. It started in the first inning with runners on the corners and one-out with Bryce Harper batting, and he tapped into an inning ending doubleplay and it kind of ended like the game started with a golden opportunity to score. With bases loaded and a chance to walk-off with Mark Reynolds at-bat, the strike zone widened and he struck-out. That really wasn’t the exclamation point on the game — it was a footnote on an offense that now has been shutout four times in nine games and the focus goes back to what went wrong like it has all season on opportunities not taken and who is not doing their job. Game #72 Gio Gonzalez tries to show he is an All-Star

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

Two weeks ago, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez looked like one of the best pitchers in baseball with his ace ERA of 2.10. People were talking about Gio as a lock for the All-Star game. Fast forward to Toronto over the weekend, and Gio looks like a pitcher who is trying to find his way back on track. Currently, Gonzalez’s 3.01 ERA ranks him now at 18th for starting pitchers.  Continue reading

Trea Turner nearly hits for a cycle and his 2 Web Gems help Nats with comeback win!

This game started off nice for the Washington Nationals then quickly went awry and the Nationals fell into a 5-1 deficit. When the team clawed back to tie the game, they quickly fell behind at the top of the next inning 6-to-5. The Nationals started off the bottom of the 7th inning with an Adam Eaton drag bunt single followed by a Juan Soto single and an Anthony Rendon bases clearing double. The inning kept going as the Nationals scored two more to get the score to 9-to-6 and eventually win this one 9-to-7. Continue reading

Juan Soto photo by LegNats for TalkNats

There were some big roster moves as expected today.  Matt Adams was moved to the 10-day DL with a fracture of his index finger as the first move of the day. Manager Dave Martinez said an additional x-ray was done last night and revealed a “slight fracture” with no timetable for his return. As expected, Wander Suero was optioned back to Triple-A Syracuse to open up another roster spot. The Nationals will go with a 4-man bench as Jefry Rodriguez was activated to pitch today, and Kelvin Herrera was added to the roster as he was indeed at Nationals Park this afternoon. Changes in ownership; Changes in strategy? #Nats

Last week, the Washington Nationals managing member of ownership was approved to transfer within the Lerner family. It was voted unanimously by Major League Baseball’s twenty-nine other owners to pass the top spot from the 92-year-old Ted Lerner to his son, Mark Lerner. It did not take long for the 64-year-old to put his first stamp on his tenure in his role as Managing Principal Owner with an early trade for his team to bring Kelvin Herrera in to bolster an already good bullpen. Sure, general manager Mike Rizzo made the trade but ownership certainly approved the deal and the assumption of $4.4 million of salary. Continue reading

Missed it by -that- much! #Nats almost get to Yankees in the 9th.

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Nationals had their chances against the Yankees and in a game of inches that was the difference tonight in the end. In the beginning, it was a lack of taking advantage of the opportunities. The Nats split both series with the Yankees on the season and lose this one 4-to-2. Continue reading

The Nationals just completed a win for their suspended game from May 15th with a Juan Soto game winning pinch-hit 2-run home run. Now, the Nationals must complete the rained-out game from May 16th with Erick Fedde starting for the Nationals and Sonny Gray for the Yankees in a match-up the Nationals saw last week in Yankees Stadium.
