Game #6 Nats first road trip of 2019 begins with the Mets home opener

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals start their first road trip of the 2019 season in CitiField against the Mets who have their home opener today. Both teams have last Saturday’s starters on the mound today in Noah Syndergaard and Stephen Strasburg who both sport identical 6.00 ERAs. The difference between the two pitchers is Strasburg was victimized by some shaky defense including a couple of misreads in centerfield while Syndergaard if anything was helped by his defense or his numbers could have been worse. For those who remember Saturday’s debacle, the Nats tied the game 4-4 in the 6th inning only to watch their first bullpen implosion in the 8th inning as the Mets scored 4 runs. The Nats battled back but fell short 11-8 in that one. Continue reading

Jake Noll walk-off walk! This was a wild game!

This was one ugly game but it became a pretty win for the Washington Nationals in walk-off fashion to hang the first loss of the season on the Philadelphia Phillies. The Nationals bullpen imploded in the 8th inning and the Phillies bullpen spiralled out of control in the 8th and  9th innings. It was the rookie Jake Noll with three total plate appearances in his MLB career that is not even a week old. He entered the game in the 9th inning against former All-Star reliever David Robertson with bases loaded and no outs, and Noll worked a 3-2 pitch to a walk-off walk. This win was maybe as improbable as how Jake Noll made it to the Major Leagues. Continue reading

Game #5 The #Nats flawed pitching plan; Bats stay quiet; Trea Turner breaks finger

Last night was a disaster — literally. Trea Turner broke the index finger on his right hand, and Matt Adams hurt his back as he flipped over the railing into the MGM seats. Add that to a lethargic Nationals effort in the game that ended in an 8-2 loss, and the Nats enter today’s game with a 1-3 record. The decision to pitch Max Scherzer into the 8th inning on Opening Day and 110 pitches when he had been pitching on a 6-day schedule and switch him last night to pitch on a 5-day schedule was not effective. Yes, Max only gave up one earned run, but he lasted only 5 innings and 96 pitches. Sure, the former Cy Young pitched well enough to win, but the Nats bullpen once again imploded. Tell us where you have heard that before. But it was the use of the bullpen that got manager Dave Martinez in hot water again, and Davey and general manager Mike Rizzo should get heat for the flawed strategy with pushing ace Max Scherzer so hard so early in the season. Was there a #Nats game tonight? Here’s a recipe for chili instead

Mmm, chili!

The Washington Nationals played a baseball game or something and also here’s a recipe for a North African-inspired chili.

Lamb and Chickpea Chili

Ingredients:

1 lb ground lamb
1 yellow bell pepper
4 cloves garlic
1 Tbsp olive oil
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
1 lg can (28 oz) whole tomatoes
1 can chickpeas
1 Tbsp chili powder
¼ tsp cayenne pepper
¼ tsp cinnamon
1 bunch kale
2 Tbsp cilantro (or to taste)

Steps:

1. Mince garlic if using fresh.
2. Chop bell pepper into ½- to 1-inch pieces.
3. Heat oil over medium heat in skillet and saute bell pepper and garlic until soft, about 5 minutes.
4. Add ground lamb, salt, and pepper and saute until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to break up meat.
5. Transfer contents of pan to large saucepan or Dutch oven, taking special caution to keep oil from spilling into pot.
6. Add 2 cups of water along with canned tomatoes, chickpeas, chili powder, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon to pot. Use spoon to break apart whole tomatoes if desired.
7. Stem and chop kale into ribbons. This can be done using kitchen scissors over pot if desired.
8. Bring to boil and then reduce heat to low before adding kale. Simmer on low heat for 15 minutes, or until tomatoes have broken down and kale is tender.
9. Remove from heat and top with chopped cilantro before serving.

Game #4 The Phillies drama was inevitable; A real test in D.C. tonight!

If you are a baseball fan who hasn’t been hibernating under a rock, you know Bryce Harper is back in Washington D.C. as a visitor tonight. The Nationals have decided to shake-up their early season rotation and pitch Max Scherzer tonight to set the tone for his team against the stacked lineup of the Phillies. This is a postseason type of move by general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez. Generally early in the season you go with the starting rotation 1-2-3-4 and use the off-days to skip your 5th starter, but the Nationals who pitched Max Scherzer on Opening Day last Thursday to 110 pitches have dispensed with conventional wisdom while the Phillies will pitch their #4 pitcher Zach Eflin today and their ace, Aaron Nola, tomorrow as planned. For what it’s worth, the Phillies enter this game with a 3-0 record as they took it to the Braves to open the season. With the crisp weather in D.C. tonight it might feel like an October playoff game, and the hope is Scherzer can prove that great pitching beats good hitting. Continue reading

Bryce Harper is Coming to Town

Bryce Harper returns to Nats Park Tuesday night after a seven year run as arguably being the face of the Nationals. He’ll have his fans, he’ll have his haters, and he’ll bring with him bus loads of members of his new family. The $330 million question for the night is how will Nats fans react. Continue reading

The #Nats walk-off for their 1st win of the season in a 1-run win; Trea Turner the hero!

The Nats had their first lead of the season, their first blown save, their first walk-off, their first one-run win, and their first win of the season. It was a day of firsts including the first game pitched by the newly acquired lefty Patrick Corbin who pitched great, but the bullpen melted down and gave up the lead only to be saved by the offensive heroics of Trea Turner who was responsible for knocking in 4-runs and scoring 3-runs. One of his runs was set-up by his speed game when he stole 2nd base and scored on an Anthony Rendon RISP single.  Continue reading

Game #3 Nats have a salvage game in this series; Corbin’s debut!

Photo by Navy Yard Nats for TalkNats

When a team has already lost all of their games in a series, the final game in that series is known as a salvage game. That is the case today for the Washington Nationals after they have dropped the first two games in this three game series. The Nationals will pin their hopes on the left arm of Patrick Corbin, and the bats that emerge from his dugout. This is Corbin’s Nationals debut after he signed the largest pitcher’s free agent deal of the off-season at 6 years for $140 million. Continue reading

Game #2 Nats look to make the little things count!

The Washington Nationals are back to work after one of their early season scheduled off-days. The best remedy for the Nats players is to get a win today after the disappointing loss on Opening Day. Today’s matchup on the mound is between Stephen Strasburg and Noah Syndergaard in this afternoon showdown. These are two of the biggest names in baseball. Both have been cover boys on Sports Illustrated — or rather Syndergaard has been a cover boy on Sports Illustrated for Kids.  Continue reading
