Game #62 Patrick Corbin gets the start in the opener of this 4-game series!

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

For Patrick Corbin, he has had to wait six days to get back on the mound after his stinker last Friday in Cincinnati. The lefty is used to throwing his slider underneath the strike zone and often in the dirt as a chase pitch. The Reds were not biting, and Corbin did not adjust to get his slider into the zone. Of course Corbin comes from the NL West which gives him a lot of experience pitching against the Padres and in Petco Park with 7 career starts and a 3.97 ERA there.  Continue reading

The Nats have their first 4-game winning streak thanks to Trea Turner’s walk-off!

Like an instant replay for Trea Turner!

The Nats blew the save but did not blow the game as Trea Turner sends 28,910 fans home happy on a walk-off 2-run blast! The Nats have their first 4-game winning streak of the season and have now won four consecutive series and nine of their last eleven games to get back to 5-games under .500. For Turner, he picked up his bullpen that blew a 3-run lead, and what should have been an Anibal Sanchez win. This was Trea Turner’s third career walk-off home run and his second of the season as he got the Nationals their first win of 2019.  In a bit of history, Turner is the first shortstop since 2006 to have two walk-off home runs in the season and last accomplished by Carlos Guillen. Turner is also the first player in MLB this season with two walk-off hits, and he has done this in just 21-full games, and in 19 of those games he has been swinging with only nine fingers wrapped around the bat. That was Turner’s first home run since returning from the IL. Continue reading

Game #61 Nats need another good start from Anibal Sanchez!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

Last week, Anibal Sanchez was brilliant on the mound as he beat the Atlanta Braves who employed him last year and helped resurrect his career. Maybe the 10-day IL stint is what Sanchie needed to get himself righted after some tough starts previously. Today the veteran pitcher needs to keep the team’s positive momentum moving forward. He will face the right-handed Dylan Covey of the White Sox. Both teams head to the airport after this two-game series as the Nationals will go cross-country to San Diego. First things first, the Nationals need to take care of business this afternoon before they depart. Continue reading

Strasburg wins his 100th on the Nats come-from-behind stunner!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

The Nationals were down by 5-runs and came back with 9 unanswered runs to win this for the team’s 8th win in their last 10 games. There were so many little things done right in this game like Yan Gomes blocking a curveball in the other batter’s box to save a run to Gomes throwing out a runner on the bases. Trea Turner started the 5th inning rally that put 6 runs across the plate from an 0-2 count he smashed a double into the gap and then tormented the White Sox pitcher Reynaldo Lopez who then walked Adam Eaton in a 3-2 count before giving up the game winning 3-run home run to Anthony Rendon who was the offensive star of the game. Stephen Strasburg earned his 100th career win because he never gave up in this game. Continue reading

Game #60 Nats find themselves in a strange spot today!

The last five days have dramatically changed how the Nationals are looking at themselves today as they ready themselves for a game tonight against the White Sox. Sure, the Nats just drafted Jackson Rutledge in a pleasant surprise, but also find themselves 6 ½ games away from first place as the Phillies got blown-out last night and are mired in a 5 game losing streak. At the same time, the Nationals have won 4 of their last 5 games to go from 10 games behind to where they are now.  It seemed improbable a week ago to make up that many games in just 5 games.  The Phillies are one loss with an Atlanta win away from being in second place.  Continue reading

UPDATED: Nats choose Jackson Rutledge with their 1st round pick! The countdown to the Draft and Craig Kimbrel is on the clock!

Draft orders and Draft dollars are locked-in for today’s Rule 4 Amateur Draft because first round draft picks cannot be traded making today more about the amateur players and who goes first — but today there is some intrigue about a veteran free agent named Craig Kimbrel who can be signed today with no “qualified offer” penalties. With the Washington Nationals historically poor bullpen, the Nationals could make their splash by signing Kimbrel who might not necessarily push the Nats over the 2019 CBT cap if they got creative. Max Scherzer throws a 1-run 8-inning gem while redlining against the Reds!

The Nationals won this series in Cincinnati making it three series wins in a row and 7-wins in the team’s last 9 games. Scherzer pushed the pedal to the metal and redlined to 120 pitches of which 84 were strikes. He was at 104 pitches in the 7th inning with a 4-1 lead, and his manager, Dave Martinez, sent him out for the 8th inning. Was there any question? When Scherzer was at 117 pitches, his manager came to the mound, and Martinez did not pull Scherzer who seemed very animated with a few choice words for his manager. Scherzer stayed and struck-out Joey Votto on 3-pitches to complete his outing on that 15th strikeout.

The question is whether it was necessary for Scherzer to push himself to that level? Sometimes you win the battle and lose the war, and we just saw that with Patrick Corbin who pitched a dud on Friday after a complete game shutout pushed him to 116 pitches in his previous outing. Scherzer is certainly known as a workhorse but he is also 35-years-old in July. Based on the regular season schedule,  Scherzer should make 19 more starts. He lowered his ERA to 3.06 on the season with this one-run game. Continue reading

Game #59 The Nats must get team average run support for Max Scherzer!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

The last time Max Scherzer pitched he had to drive in one of the two runs that scored for him. He departed after the 6th inning with a 2-1 lead. Scherzer did his part — his teammates did not do theirs. So goes the season of Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals. On the days the multiple Cy Young winner pitches, the team record is a horrific 2 wins and 10 losses and most of that is based on the lack of run support which is about 2 runs a game if you take out the 12-run game and the 5-run game which are the only two he has won.  Continue reading

Exclusive: Sean Burnett behind the scenes; Jamal Collier’s thoughts!

The team of Nibley and King scored a major victory when they got the elusive Sean Burnett for an exclusive interview immediately after Burnie announced his retirement and then agreed to appear on the latest installment of the TalkNats Podcast.

Because Sean Burnett does not have social media, many were taken by surprise that the popular lefty reliever was hanging it up…for now. This season he was back in Syracuse in Triple-A, but this time he was Mets property and this week he knew it didn’t feel right and it was time to retire. It just so happens that he lives minutes from the Nationals complex at West Palm Beach and would like to work for the Nats in the future. He feels he could take his experience and could coach up minor leaguers. For now, he will spend time with his family and watch his own son play baseball. Continue reading

Nats put the L on Roark thanks to Gerardo Parra!

Photo by USA TODAY Sports Images

The Washington Nationals evened up this series with a chance to win the series tomorrow, and the Nats did it with a 3-run home run by Gerardo Parra and some great bullpen pitching today. It was the Nationals middle infielders who turned three doubleplays to help their pitchers today. Starting pitcher Erick Fedde bent but didn’t break today after some really tough innings and a high pitch count (85) led to an abbreviated 4.0 inning outing.

When Fedde exited with a 4-2 lead, he handed the game to a bullpen that would have to go 5.0 innings to close this game out. Matt Grace was the first man out of the ‘pen, and he handed the ball to Tanner Rainey. It was Rainey who earned the win and Wander Suero earned a 2.0 inning hold and Sean Doolittle had the 9th inning save. In all, the bullpen threw a 5.0 inning shutout to seal the deal and get their ERA back below 7.00 to 6.85. Continue reading
