Fedde is the “Stopper” as Nats shutout the Giants 4-0

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Nationals needed Erick Fedde to lead them to a victory over one of the hottest pitchers in baseball as Jeff Samardzija had been nearly unbeatable for a month with a 2.09 ERA in July, but the Nats ran up Samardzija’s pitch count to 98 pitches and knocked him out after 4.0 innings en route to a 4-0 shutout. Fedde went 6.0 scoreless innings and did not issue a walk or give up a run, and the Nats new-look bullpen took care of the final 3.0 innings to preserve the shutout. The Nationals offense did it via a lot of walks and very little situational hitting. Continue reading

Game #112 Nats need Fedde to be the “Stopper”

Photo by Kevin Nibley for TalkNats

The trip to Arizona was like a trip and fall as the team lost a game started by a member of the team’s “Big Four” which it had not done since June 15th when Stephen Strasburg lost to Arizona in Nats Park. Now, the team has lost two games in a row which included yesterday’s loss started by Patrick Corbin. Manager Dave Martinez will look to Erick Fedde to be the “stopper” as the Washington Nationals begin a three game series in San Francisco. Continue reading

Nats pitching and umpire factor into another loss in a common theme!

Nobody would say Patrick Corbin was good today as he gave up 5 earned runs over 5 1/3 innings — but he deserved better. Corbin’s defense did not make some plays, and at an inopportune time the home plate umpire, Chris Conroy, had an inconsistent strike zone (graphic below) on the inside edge and throughout the outing. One crucial miss by the umpire turned into two runs. Extra pitches were tacked on when outs were not made plus the Nats defensive alignments all series by not protecting the corner infield on the pull side was suspect. In a tie game, Wander Suero took the loss after he gave up two runs via a HBP on an 0-2 pitch, a single on an 0-2 pitch, and then the two-run single with two outs which was the ultimate difference in this 7-5 loss. Game #111 Corbin back where it all began!

Photo by Navy Yard Nats for TalkNats

It was seven years ago when Patrick Corbin made his debut for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and he was an All-Star in his first full season there a year later. He became one of the best pitchers in baseball while pitching in the Wild West of the NL West which included notorious hitter’s parks like his old home field in Arizona and Colorado’s Coors Field. If last night’s 25-runs scored proved anything, it is that baseballs sitting pre-game in a humidor still fly in Chase Field.  Continue reading

A laugher, but not much fun for Stephen Strasburg and the #Nats

The Arizona Diamondbacks annihilated the Washington Nationals tonight in a game that was so one-sided that it saw not one, but two Nationals position players pitching in the bottom of the eighth inning. Continue reading

Game #110 Dueling aces on the mound with Strasburg for the #Nats

This weekend series in the desert continues for the Washington Nationals as the newly crowned NL Pitcher of the Month pitches for the Washington Nationals tonight against the Diamondbacks. For Stephen Strasburg, he gets to take the mound in Max Scherzer‘s absence as the ace of this staff, and Stras had a July to remember with his ERA of 1.14 over 31 2/3 innings plus he had three RISP hits, 6 RBIs, and a .571 slugging % in July. The Diamondbacks will pitch the lefty ex-Nats farmhand Robbie Ray who is now the their ace after his team traded Zack Greinke this week. Continue reading

Joe Ross pitches a 5 1/3 one-hit shutout; Bullpen perfect! Big City provides the Big wood!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Nationals pitchers threw a combined one-hit shutout led by starter Joe Ross and the offense was led by Matt Adams. The bullpen threw 3 2/3 perfect innings, but Roenis Elias in his Nats debut exited with an apparent hamstring injury that in the postgame was described as a cramp, and it happened when he was asked to bat. In other news, Howie Kendrick was scratched in the pre-game due to a leg cramp. More will be known tomorrow on the condition of both players. The Nats won 3-0, with the offense provided by Matt Adams who hit a 2-run double with 2 outs, and Juan Soto hit an add-on home run. Adams 2-runs broke up the 0-0 tie in the 6th inning and is all the Nats needed to notch the W. The Nats defense was excellent in this pitcher’s duel in a game that the Nats hung the first loss of the season on rookie Alex Young of the Diamondbacks who was also pitching well until Adams got him in a lefty-lefty matchup. The D’Backs intentionally walked Brian Dozier in front of Adams just to try to victimize Adams who was a late entry into the lineup to replace Kendrick! Continue reading

Game #109 Nats have a key weekend series in Arizona

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Nationals are in Phoenix, Arizona for a weekend series against the Diamondbacks. With yesterday’s day-off, the team could have reseeded their rotation, but they appear to have decided to keep the rotation in the order it has been in, and they will not skip Joe Ross (9.85 ERA) who will pitch tonight in Arizona. Ross pitched on Saturday with Stephen Strasburg on Sunday and with the day-off yesterday, they could have gone with Stras on regular rest to face left-handed Robbie Ray. The Nats have lost 2-in-a-row and will be looking for Ross to step up and be a “stopper” for his team. Continue reading

The #Nats bullpen will look much different on Friday

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

At some point today at the Nationals’ team hotel in Scottsdale, Arizona, there will be some new guests checking-in by the last names of Hudson, Elias, and Strickland. These are the new bullpen pitchers who the Nationals traded for yesterday. Rarely do you see a one day change where a bullpen will have 37.5% or more turnover. If they arrive early enough, they might get in some golfing at Camelback or just relax at the pool where they could run into some new teammates, and at some point they will shake hands with general manager Mike Rizzo, manager Dave Martinez, pitching coach Paul Menhart, and bullpen coach Henry Blanco. Hopefully  the new guys can meet up sooner than later with their catchers, Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki, and get a few minutes with each. Tomorrow, the real work starts as the Nationals have their pitcher’s meeting for the new series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The acclimation period is short, and like most teams the catchers have been provided with analytics on their new pitchers.  Continue reading

The “Trade Winds” blew in for the #Nats

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

You just knew Nationals’ general manager Mike Rizzo was going to make a deal, and leading up to this year’s only trade deadline at 4pm, the Nationals made their moves. In fact when everything was said and done they traded for three relievers. Continue reading
