Disappointed and saddened by the Nats latest decision on the Minor Leaguers!

A few days ago we were applauding Dodgers’ pitcher David Price for stepping up for the Minor Leaguers who fall into two categories: the haves and the have-nots. Roughly 40% of minor leaguers received signing bonuses of at least six-figures during the draft, free agency, or as an international signee or earned enough money because they were a major leaguer at points in their career. The other 60% are the majority of minor leaguers who signed for $5,000 to $25,000 are the “have-nots” who least can afford making less money. The Nationals were the latest team to cut into their pay according to Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic. She reported that the Nats will continue to pay their minor leaguers, but will pay them $300 per week instead of $400 per week that was previously agreed to.  Continue reading

“IMPROBABLE” rebroadcast tonight in its entirety! What is improbable?

Graphic from Nationals graphic department

Last weekend, the Washington Nationals in-house video production crew aired their documentary in two parts over two nights entitled “IMPROBABLE”, and tonight at 7 p.m. ET, they will re-air the documentary in its entirety in one part over three hours. For a Nats fan, this should be required viewing in order to keep your “fan card” valid. Is the documentary perfect? No, but it is darn good as it shows some video and interviews that had not seen before.  Continue reading

The Price is right in a way you have no idea! Minor league is in shambles!

If you have been away from baseball for awhile, the situation in Minor League baseball is deteriorating quickly during this COVID-19 crisis. The players at the bottom of the food chain who were not high draft picks, with large signing bonuses to fall back on, are struggling worse than ever.

All teams had been paying their minor leaguers who were not on the 40-man roster a sum of $400 per week. In some cases after making a car payment, insurance, and rent, there was no money for food. But yesterday news broke that hundreds of minor leaguers were cut, and earlier in the week it was reported that the Oakland A’s were no longer going to pay their minor leaguers the $400 after Sunday. In a show of support, David Price who is new with the Dodgers stepped in. He finally had enough of it and has vowed to pay every minor leaguer in his Dodgers organization $1,000 for the month of June.  Continue reading

The State of Baseball and negotiating in good faith

Scherzer walking away; Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

When Max Scherzer is your union player rep, you can expect an intensity level to be on high when it comes to his opinion. Restarting baseball during this COVID-19 crisis is complicated because of health concerns and MLB is renegotiating the plan that was agreed to almost two months ago with the player’s association in which they signed-off on a proration of salaries if/when baseball resumed based on fewer games played. Now, baseball (MLB) is looking to pay-out approximately 20-30 percent in salaries in total according to reports. Scherzer is challenging baseball owners to open up their books which is something they have never done publicly or for the player’s consumption. The owners did seem to offer to show their revenues but not their expenses.  Continue reading
