All of the positives won’t make this loss feel any better……. Nats need to consider the trade market!

Manager Dave Martinez chose Austin Voth as his fifth starter this season, and with the injury to Stephen Strasburg, he moved up to the fourth starter’s spot. The team is 1-4 in Voth starts and the one win was a slugfest the Nats won after Voth gave up five runs. You just cannot continue this way if you have postseason aspirations. Voth has a 6.65 ERA and gave up 6 runs in this one over just 3 2/3 innings and rookie Dakota Bacus gave up 4 runs in just 2/3 of an inning. The rest of the Nats pitchers held the Marlins to 1 run over 4 2/3 innings while the Nats offense knocked in another 8 runs in this game. Continue reading

Game #26 Nats adjusting to empty stadiums

Turner scores again; Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The name of the game is baseball and you win by scoring more runs than your opponent. Trea Turner had just tied the Nats franchise record for scoring runs in eleven consecutive games — but the problem in those eleven games was that the Nats only outscored their opponents in six of those games. Other Nats have not been getting the job done on a consistent basis besides Juan Soto, Luis Garcia, and Asdrubal Cabrera. Continue reading

Anibal Sanchez with the ace outing as his offense explodes!

Strikeout by Anibal Sanchez; Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Nats needed a laugher and got that from a nine run offensive explosion and a 7.0 inning one-run performance from Anibal Sanchez. The only reliever on this day who was called in from the bullpen was Ryne Harper. He closed out the game with 2.0 innings of work.  Continue reading

Game #25 is an early afternoon game for the Nats

Photo by Craig Nedrow for TalkNats

After witnessing fourteen innings of baseball in Nationals Park that at times looked like a Little Game, we get early baseball today. Those two games  with errors turning a single into a three-bagger and a lazy liner popping out of a glove by the Marlins, and the Nats players not communicating with each other on two popups and booting grounder after grounder were mind-boggling. — You just want to turn the page on those two games yesterday that lasted seven innings each in a split for each team. Game #24 has the 29th man for the doubleheader, Wil Crowe, getting the start!

The Nats will have another debut with the promotion of Wil Crowe to the active roster as the 29th player for this doubleheader. In a 2020 anomaly, the Nats will be the visiting team in Nats Park which will allow Crowe to pitch after Marlins call-up Sixto Sanchez makes his MLB debut. The dueling duos of MLB debuts is rare in a game not played in September. Crowe joins fellow teammates like Seth Romero, Dakota Bacus, Luis Garcia, and Kyle Finnegan who have all made their MLB debuts this season. Continue reading

Game #23 is the first game of a doubleheader of 7-innings each!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

After a disappointing in the batter’s box last night for the Nats, they are back at it quickly with a day/night doubleheader. The Nats must get on a lengthy winning streak to get off the bottom of the NL East. The Nationals face the Marlins, and Jon Morosi claims the previous last place Marlins will be buyers leading up to the trade deadline. We still do not know the direction the Nats will be going in as they are missing Stephen Strasburg and Starlin Castro for the long-term. Continue reading

One pitch was the difference in the game by Patrick Corbin

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

While Patrick Corbin did not have his best stuff tonight, he certainly was one pitch from giving up no runs as Miguel Rojas got him for a 2-out three run homer. The Nats lost 3-2 and could not muster enough offense to push over anymore runs than the two they scored from home runs by Yan Gomes and Trea Turner. Continue reading

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals are in Nats Park for a five game series in four days against the Miami Marlins. With another night of unpredictable weather, the teams will hope to get this game going. The Marlins have made over a dozen roster moves the last three days, and they finally named a starter for tonight. Continue reading

Baseball America’s Top 100 rankings mid-season update; Luis Garcia up-to-date!

Garcia debuted 8/14/2020; Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

There is a new mid-season update from Baseball America that has Carter Kieboom ranked as their 17th top prospect, and Luis Garcia as their 100th top prospect. No other Nats players made the list as expected. As always on that list, Minor League performance does not guarantee Major League success and vice versa. Several of the players from that Baseball America list have struggled during their callups. One of the most notable callups is Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels. Truth be told, he has given up more home runs as a defender (see blooper reel) than he has hit which is zero. His .211 batting average based on 38 at-bats is not a huge sample size, but it is not a stretch to say he is struggling. Adell is № 3 on that list in all of baseball.  Continue reading

Exclusive: Sterling Sharp makes a sharp turn to finally get to Nats Park!

Sterling Sharp was the likeliest Nationals minor leaguer to be added to the 40-man roster, but it did not happen.

Leading up to the potential Rule-5 players who could be added to 40-man rosters, Sao Magnifico wrote, “If the Nats don’t protect 24-year-old hurler Sterling Sharp, it would qualify as a genuine shock.” He was right, and we were shocked when the Nats did not protect Sharp. For general manager Mike Rizzo, he got it wrong. It happens, and it is usually a numbers squeeze to protect Rule-5 eligible players on a roster that has to be at no more than 40 players. The Marlins wisely scooped up Sharp in the Rule-5 draft at the Winter Meetings over eight months ago clearing a path for Sharp to make the Marlins 2020 opening day roster. Continue reading
