We are back in Atlanta for the final series in that city this year. A few of the Nats players get to sleep in their off-season homes as they are from the Atlanta area. For the rest, it is the team hotel. This team is starting to gel on offense, and it is good to see. Lane Thomas is embracing the lead-off role, Josh Bell is bashing again, and Juan Soto is making a statement to be considered in the MVP voting.

In this 5-game wrap-around series with the Mets, the Nats had three walk-off opportunities with a runner on third base and less than one out — and they capitalized on just one of those golden tickets. Better late than never as the Nats got the walk-off winner today to head on a happy flight from D.C. to Atlanta.
Sometimes baseball does not give you a second chance, but sometimes it does. Carpé diem — sieze the day. Carter Kieboom came up to bat for his second chance, facing the same closer, Edwin Diaz, with the Mets who schooled Kieboom on Friday night. Diaz made quick work of him on three pitches for the strikeout just three nights ago. This afternoon, Kieboom was ready for him and shot a 70.7 mph grounder up the middle that Met’s shortstop, Francisco Lindor, lunged for and the ball clanked off of his Rawlings glove and pinballed past second baseman Javy Baez into centerfield for the game winning single. Yes, it is Labor Day, and it has felt like a laborious task to watch Patrick Corbin for most of this season. The Washington Nationals have two other lefties now in the starting rotation who have bested Corbin, and chances are 99.9% of baseball fans have no idea who Josh Rogers and Sean Nolin are. Both have better ERA’s than the $24 million a year Corbin with his 6.27 ERA entering this game. In fact Rogers and Nolin will make well under $700,000 if they pitch the rest of the month on the Major League side. Continue reading

The seven game losing streak was snapped with this win. There was plenty of fireworks in Mr. Rogers neighborhood in this game. Yes, Josh Rogers almost cruised through six innings on his way to his first victory. Because this was a 7.0 inning game, the bullpen just needed to get through 1 1/3 innings to close out the win. Sometimes you don’t need a home run to win a game. The stage was setup perfectly for the birthday boy, Carter Kieboom, last night. One out, the winning run on third base, and all you need at a minimum is a productive out to win the game.
Kieboom whiffed on three pitches to put the scales in favor of the Mets to get out of the jam after they had already blown the save to make it a 2-2 game. It wasn’t like manager Dave Martinez had a better option on his bench with Gerardo Parra, Adrian Sanchez, and Alex Avila as his available bench players.
One of the Nats best comebacks of the season was snuffed out after a Juan Soto home run made the score 2-1 in the ninth inning followed by a Ryan Zimmerman walk, and a Riley Adams double scored the pinch-running Andrew Stevenson who trucked the Mets’ catcher at the plate to jar the ball loose and tie the game. With youth comes mistakes, and you must learn by them. And in this case you must win with them. The youngsters must step up if the Washington Nationals have any chance of winning any more games this season. Even with Juan Soto‘s big game yesterday, it was not enough. The Nats are a season’s worst 55-77 entering this game with 30 left to play. If they cannot win eight more games, it will be a 100 loss season. Think about that for a moment. Continue reading

Yesterday’s pre-game article spoke to the 7-game losing streak against the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Washington Nationals would run that to 8-games with great ineptitude after the loss on Thursday. Of those 8-games, the Nats led in six of them and blew leads in a variety of ways.
As was written in the pre-game, if the Phillies make the postseason, the Phillies skipper, Joe Girardi, owes the Nats manager, Dave Martinez, a gift. Girardi was a manager who was rumored a month ago as being on the hot seat and could have been fired after the season. Martinez might have saved Girardi’s job — indirectly. Continue reading

We’ve also reduced the comment refresh delay from about 30 seconds to 10 seconds, making it much closer to real-time.
We understand there have been frustrations and increased feedback, and we’re actively working to improve things. What we ask is simple: use the system and give it a fair shot. Repeated complaints without details don’t help us solve problems—we appreciate your patience as we continue refining the experience.
