Nats Spring Training 2026, this time it counts

Spring Training history for the Washington Nationals goes back 21 years now to its beginnings in 2005. The setting was a town about an hour east of Orlando called Viera near the Melbourne beaches on the Atlantic Ocean side. Yes, that town near Cape Canaveral where they launched rockets. The inaugural year was a year of getting to know each other. Everything felt kind of rented and not permanent. Viera felt as temporary and contrived as RFK Stadium since we all knew that the team would be out of there in a matter of years.

A year later, Ryan Zimmerman entered his first Spring Training before the 2006 season, and the Virginia local guy immediately became a fan favorite. After a few years, he made it known that he was not a fan of the long preseasons in Florida, the wins don’t count, the stats don’t count for players like him, so let’s get north and start the season.

As the face of the franchise during most of his time as Employee No. 11, that sentiment of how Zim felt about Spring Training was likely shared with much of the clubhouse. Certainly the team’s former television network didn’t see much value in Spring Training either. But is this year different? Is 2026 the most important Spring Training in the 20+ years since the Nats came to DC?

Who the heck is that guy? #Nats 2026 spring training field guide, part 3 (coaches)

This is the first time that TalkNats has published a separate part of this annual-ish guide for the coaching staff. But these are unusual times.

The manager and all but one of his twelve coaches are entirely new to the Washington Nationals organization. All but one of them are younger than the oldest active MLB player. Some confusion, as we try to figure out who’s who in the dugout, is understandable.

The first two parts of this feature covered pitchers and position players. Now, here’s a quick guide to the Nats’ new manager and coaches.

Betting on the Nationals in 2026: What Are the Odds of Their Success?

Washington finished 2025 with a 66-96 record. Ownership fired the old regime and brought in new leadership. The new leader, President of Baseball Operations, Paul Toboni, got rid of over 50 staffers and only retained two coaches from the MLB staff, Sean Doolittle and Gerardo Parra. While Doolittle stayed in his old spot, Parra will work in player development. So many new faces.

The best pitcher on the roster, MacKenzie Gore, got shipped to Texas in a 5-for-1 trade. And now, heading into 2026, DraftKings has the Nationals listed at 500-1 to win the World Series. FanGraphs rounds their championship probability down to 0.2%. By every reasonable measure, this is a team that most people should ignore. But most people are not placing futures bets, and for those who are, the Nationals present something worth examining with a straight face.

Who the heck is that guy? #Nats 2026 spring training field guide, part 2 (position players)

As the Washington Nationals return to West Palm Beach, we can expect to see quite a few unfamiliar faces among them this spring.

I previously provided a quick guide to new pitchers. This part takes a look at the catchers, infielders, and outfielders who are newly in the mix for roles on the team in 2026.

The birds are singing, the sprinklers are sprinkling, and the fastballs are flying at the Cacti Park of the Palm Beaches.

Washington Nationals: Pitchers and Catchers report today at CACTI Park Of The Palm Beaches

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

Pitchers and catchers report today to the Washington Nationals Spring Training camp at the CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches. This camp already feels different from any other camp. Even before the official opening of camp, a source told us that there is already pitchers throwing live BP to Nats’ hitters. For the first time since the Expos relocated to Washington, D.C. in 2005, the team simultaneously has a new President of Baseball Operations, Paul Toboni, a new manager Blake Butera, and a new GM, Ani Kilambi. The team even has a new President of Business Operations in Jason Sinnarajah. Usually the only time you would see this is when there is a change of ownership. That was not the case here.

With new beginnings, there brings new hope. There were three impactful trades this offseason, a Rule-5 acquisition, several waiver claims, and one MLB free agent signing for over the league minimum. And as I was writing this article, a source messaged me that the Nats are in talks with Miles Mikolas, a free agent pitcher. Let’s see if this happens as Toboni has been trying for weeks to acquire MLB pitching. He made no secret about that.

Baseball opens its facilities officially this week!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

All 30 Major League teams officially open their Spring Training camps this week. Most of the pitchers and catchers are already checked into their Spring Training residences. Many of the position players will follow shortly. This is baseball’s time. The most fortunate players will still be playing in 8½ months. The rest get those early October tee times. Hope springs eternal.

You better have that hope no matter what the odds makers say. They predict — but you play the game. Be that player who defies the odds. Have that undeniable Spring Training where you force your way onto the roster. This is where dreams are made.
