LSU head coach: Paul Skenes is the “closest comparison since Stephen Strasburg”

The Washington Nationals franchise was in a dark and ominous place a year ago as Juan Soto was turning down record-breaking offers from the Nats — a team that was rumored to be sold imminently at the time. Also, the Nats had mostly middling prospects going into last season, but none, other than Cade Cavalli, were turning heads at a national level in a farm system that ranked last; they were at the bottom of MLB in the standings, and had a nebulous future via another road to being a championship team.

Skip ahead a few months from there to July of 2022, and with a blockbuster trade of Soto, the Nationals acquired five elite players for their farm system just weeks after the MLB draft added a Top-100 prospect in Elijah Green, and a Top-200 prospect in Jake Bennett. By August 1 of last year, there seemed to be a much clearer future looking through the clouds at the sunshine. And now in just 40 days and 40 nights, is the 2023 draft — and the Nats hold the coveted second pick overall in one of the deepest tops of a draft, ever. That’s a game changer.

Game #54 The Nats are back in L.A. for NL baseball!

The Washington Nationals looked like they were ready to celebrate their first series win since August of 2021 in yesterday’s game, but it was not meant to be. From a MacKenzie Gore 7.0 inning gem and a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning, it all slipped away on the team’s 11th blown save, and 11th bullpen loss. An error by the normally sure-handed Dom Smith, in Bill Buckner style, turned into the winning run in the final inning for the Royals. The Nats will now face the Dodgers for three games with this contest marking the one-third pole in the season.

Game #53 is huge for the Nats! Also big prospect news!

The Washington Nationals notched another come-from-behind win last night in Kansas City. This team is playing exciting baseball, and tomorrow they will reach the one-third mark in the season. Since that trip to l’étoile du nord, “the star of the north”, in Minnesota, the Nats are 18-16 in that 34-game stretch, and while that sounds good for a rebuilding team — fact is that is the fourth best record in that span for NL teams.

Game #52 The Nats bats came alive last night in a KC masterpiece!

The Washington Nationals authored a KC masterpiece with a relentless offensive explosion last night scoring 12-runs, and led by a 6-for-6 performance by Luis Garcia. All of a sudden, he is batting .288, and he tied Anthony Rendon for the only Nat with 6-hits in a game. Rendon did that back on April 30, 2017.

Unfortunately, the Nats 9-3 lead was not the laugher it was supposed to be with a scare in the 7th inning. Starter Patrick Corbin came out for that inning after a shaky 6th inning in which he gave up a run, and a pitch count of 92. It appeared he was done with a Quality Start, but there he was for the 7th and he put three runners on-base with no outs before he retired his first out and was pulled.

Game #50 will determine this series winner and standings movement!

The Washington Nationals have a golden opportunity to win another series with a win today. A lot of the outcome could come on the arm of Jake Irvin who up until 4 1/3 innings ago had an 0.84 ERA and enters this game with a 5.50 ERA. In those 4 1/3 innings, Irvin gave up 12-runs of which 10 were earned runs.

Mike Rizzo and Davey Martinez are in contract limbo!

It is no secret that the Washington Nationals and their President of Baseball Operations and GM, Mike Rizzo, and manager Dave Martinez are in their final year of their current contracts. Both got sizeable raises after they jointly won the 2019 World Series, and last year their team options were both picked up for this 2023 season. While their salaries are not public information — both are thought to be getting compensated in the Top-5 in all of baseball.

Game #49 Trevor Williams gets to face his boyhood team!

The Washington Nationals showed their never give-up play on the field as they tied up the game 3-3 late last night, but the bullpen and a bizarre defensive play cost them another win. It was CJ Abrams as the Nats potential power hero once again as he blasted an upper deck two-run shot and then Lane Thomas went back-to-back. But one of the strangest plays you will ever see was turned in by Dom Smith as he was the cutoff man on a throw from Thomas, and Smith inexplicably gloved a ball that was on a lasered line set for Keibert Ruiz that should have been the third out, but instead was the go-ahead run and a momentum killer on the Nats.
