Postgamer #16: Burn the tape game, Nats get clobbered in Pittsburgh: A (somewhat) Recap

This postgame series that I like to do is based strictly upon optimism, because if you’ve wanted to be depressed at any time in the last six seasons, all you’ve needed to do, unfortunately, is watch most games. So tonight’s recap is going to be a little bit different.

Regarding the actual game action, I’ve decided that all you guys really need to know is that over the course of eight and a half innings of baseball tonight, the Pirates scored 16 runs. In that time span, the Nationals managed just 5. Some would say that this means the Nationals got walloped by a score of 16-5 tonight, but I’m going to leave that up to interpretation and skip straight to the positives.

Game #16 Does it feel like a playoff game to you?

The Washington Nationals completed a sweep in Milwaukee and headed to another NL Central opponent: the Pittsburgh Pirates. Thanks to what the Nats did to the Cubs and Brewers, the Pirates have sole possession of first place in the NL Central. Does it feel like Game 1 of the playoffs with Paul Skenes facing Cade Cavalli tonight? We wish, right?!? Cavalli can’t worry about what Skenes is doing — Cavalli just needs to control what he can control and try to put up zeroes.

Postgamer #15 The Nats accomplish their first sweep of 2026

The Washington Nationals not only notched their first sweep of the 2026 — they also swept the Milwaukee Brewers in their home stadium for the first time in 20 years on June 4, 2006. With this win, the Nats moved to 1.0 game of .500, and moved into a 3rd place tie with the Phillies in the NL East.

Game #15 Nats will try to sweep today!

The Washington Nationals find themselves in unchartered territory today with their first chance to sweep a series in 2026. If they can accomplish the sweep, it takes some pressure off the team as they fly to Pittsburgh tomorrow and face the reigning NL Cy Young winner, Paul Skenes. The Nats have won the first game of every series except the one started by Miles Mikolas. There is a reason they play the games — and back to today’s game, the Nats have Zack Littell on the mound for his third appearance and second start of the season.

Postgamer #14: Nats escape with a 3-1 win, securing the series in Milwaukee: A recap

That one was scary until the final out was recorded. The Washington Nationals had to stave off the fiercest comeback attempt they’ve faced all season tonight, as a Foster Griffin gem was very nearly unraveled by a pesky Brewers lineup in the final frame. But thanks to some timely hitting earlier in the game, and some blue-collar outs recorded by Clayton Beeter in the ninth inning, the Nationals escaped the evening with their second win in as many nights, and gave them an opportunity tomorrow for their first sweep of the season. Let’s get into it.

Game #14 Nats have shown they can beat good teams!

The Washington Nationals put together their best bullpen game of the season last night on their way to beating another of the 2025 playoff teams. In fact the Nationals have now played in five series to start the season, and have already played four of those series again 2025 playoff teams. The Nats have played all of the NL division winners from last year, and one of the wild card teams so far. Again, the schedulers really stuck it to the Nationals.

Postgamer #13: Nats come up with big-time ninth inning rally to take game one in Milwaukee: A recap

What a win! The Nationals seemingly fought off the demons that had been terrorizing them throughout the whole series against St. Louis, en route to a wild win tonight in game one against the Brewers. Jake Irvin started the game off rather shakily, but settled in beautifully after the first inning and gave the Nationals five very solid innings. After that, some even bigger demons from earlier in the week were conquered, as the bullpen came in and absolutely shut down the Brewers’ offense, giving their own offense the time to tie the game and eventually blow it open in the ninth.

Game #13 Can the good Jake Irvin step up?

The Washington Nationals have to look at what they did right in their first 4 games, and what they didn’t do right in their past 8 games to try to come up with solutions. There is no easy matchup this weekend against the 8-4 Milwaukee Brewers. The Nationals will send Jake Irvin to the mound with the hopes that he is more like his first start of the season.
