Today was another with a lot of moves, and while none of the new players added to the roster today are in the starting lineup, you will notice that only two of the nine position players were in the Opening Day lineup — and of course you knew it was Lane Thomas and Cesar Hernandez. The other seven players came from many different places to the Washington Nationals roster.
As we broke the news last night and early this morning, the Nats were going to send catcher Keibert Ruiz to the 10-day IL with a testicular contusion, and in his place the team promoted top prospect catcher Israel Pineda — Pumba to his friends. In addition we reported that for the third time this season, Jordan Weems would be in the Nats bullpen. To make room for Weems, the Nats DFA’d Jake McGee.
On Pineda, he started the season at age 22 in Wilmington High-A and raked there. He was promoted to Double-A and Triple-A a little over a week ago. Now he’s in the Major Leagues. With an open roster spot in Rochester, the Nats signed outfielder DJ Peters to a minor league deal. Peters debuted last year with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
