This win #40 came in the 79th game in the 2019 season, and the Nats took the a 39-40 record into this game. Manager Dave Martinez was preaching “Go 1-0 every game” and eventually the Nats turned their losing record into a winning record. It took the Nats until June 28th to reach a winning record and they got to 12 games above .500 on August 21st. They dug themselves a deep hole, and it took much longer to dig out of it.
It was Stephen Strasburg‘s turn to follow what Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin just did to the Marlins and shutdown their offense. Well, Stras wasn’t great on this day in June however his offense picked him up in the 6th inning to get him a lead and more importantly a win to get the Nats back to .500.
This modest winning streak got the Nats in a position going forward to hover around .500 and get above it before the calendar turned to July. The Nats were slowly moving to a position of being “buyers” at the trade deadline instead of being “sellers”.
In this game, the Nats used to the 6th inning to bat around and make Stephen Strasburg into a winner for his 9th W of the season. It looked like Stras would be in a position to win 20 games and got close with 18 wins in the 2019 season.
