Game #92 Murphy rests, Roark’s turn tonight: Game Thread

For the 2nd night in a row, Daniel Murphy is not in the starting line-up for the Washington Nationals, but Dusty Baker did indicate that Murphy could be available off the bench. Dusty wants to give Murphy’s sore hamstring one extra day. Dusty Baker goes heavy on the lefties adding in one more than usual when a right-handed pitcher starts as Stephen Drew will take Murphy’s spot at 2nd base, and Clint Robinson will take Ryan Zimmerman’s spot at 1st base.

Tonight matches up top of the rotation pitchers with Tanner Roark and Gerrit Cole. In early June, Cole injured his triceps muscle in his right throwing arm. Cole had been out on the DL for over a month and last pitched for the Pirates thirty-six days ago. Continue reading

Nats win the first game out of the break on Strasburg gem: Postgame

Stephen Strasburg led the Nats to their 4th straight win, and in the process improved to 13-0 with a 2.51 ERA.

Strasburg looked like he had no-hitter stuff again and was aided by exceptional defense until a little problem in the 5th with a Marte single, stolen base, and scored on a ball over Robinson who was playing middle of the dirt and missed the ball by inches.

The Nats got the run back on a Ramos single who later scored on a Robinson single.

The game was decided in the bottom of the 7th on a leadoff walk by Danny Espinosa, a Clint Robinson single, 2 errors by the Pirates and then a 2 run blast by Michael Taylor for the final tally to make the final score 5-1.

The Nats improved to a season best 19 games over .500.

Game #91 and back to business. Strasburg starts the 2nd half: Game Thread

It is back to the business of baseball, and the trade deadline closes in 16 days as the clock is ticking. Business 101 says as a true capitalist “bigger is better”. That can relate to the trade market where the key strategy in a finite market is to look to expand while also trying to block your competitors to entry in acquiring an unique asset. The Nationals might not get the two best trade chips in their areas of need which are Andrew Miller and Carlos Gonzalez, and if they do not, you drive up the price for your competition.

Our sources tell us Mike Rizzo is looking at several bullpen options and prefers a back of the bullpen arm who could work as a set-up man, and has closing experience like Andrew Miller, Alex Colome, and Ryan Madson. The Nationals’ manager Dusty Baker would like Aroldis Chapman who would be a closer which appears to be problematic on the surface as that job is currently filled by the Nationals’ closer Jonathan Papelbon. Bryce Harper isn’t a genie, but he does grant wishes!

There is much more to Bryce Harper than what meets the eye. His depth of character for a young man his age is astounding. Harper’s Heroes is a charitable endeavor that Bryce Harper started when he was just 20-years-old as a way to give back to the Washington, D.C. community’s less fortunate. Bryce teamed up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to start a grassroots approach to work directly with children affected by blood cancers.

Bryce

“The creation of Harper’s Heroes three years ago has given young children touched by blood cancer a day away from cancer and a day that they will never forget,” said Whitney Klinke who is the Director of Donor Development for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of the DC Chapter.

“Spending time with Bryce, asking questions during a mock press conference, enjoying batting practice and a NATS game means so much to these kids and their families. We are deeply appreciative for Bryce’s long-standing support, financial contributions, compassion for patients and the much needed awareness he continues to create for the LLS mission.”
