Nats take a 6-4 lead into the 8th and blow it in multiple ways: Postgame

The Nationals offense came alive in this game, but the pitching, defense and baffling managerial decisions were costly in this game.

Ray Knight in the post-game report showed how Michael Taylor once again showed poor defensive instincts on a ball hit to him that ended up being a 2-out game winning RBI to make the score at the time 7-6.

Danny Espinosa made the big error in this game in the 3rd inning as Lucas Giolito‘s start fell apart with no outs as a routine grounder became a man on 1st. That ballooned into a 3-run inning, and the Nats clawed back for 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning with a 2-run HR by Wilson Ramos.

Giolito couldn’t get out of the 4th inning lasting 1 out into that frame. Giolito finished with 3 1/3 innings with 4 runs, 2 earned runs. Giolito was replaced by Matt Belisle which called into question why Dusty did not go to his long-man Yusmeiro Petit.

It was baffling how Dusty Baker managed his bullpen today, and we have seen this before with leaving a young starter in too long and then questionable bullpen management. Felipe Rivero was not available today, but why did he not use Petit early in the game? You learn you never save your long-man for late in a game as you worry about that if you need it as there were other options such as  using Blake Treinen could then be used as your long-man if necessary.

Giolito’s fastball averaged only 93.5 mph with a max of 95.9 and only got 1 swing and miss. Giolito was not fooling batters today and had no strikeouts while walking 3 with 4 hits.

Game #99 Nats hope 3rd time is the charm for Lucas Giolito: Game Thread

The Nationals will call-up Lucas Giolito today, and the Nationals hope the 3rd time is the charm for Lucas to get his 1st MLB win. This will be Giolito’s 3rd ‘spot’ start for the Nationals, and from our sources this should only be a 1 day gig as he will be sent back to AAA when Sammy Solis is activated for Tuesday’s game. What needs to happen today is a roster move to make room for Giolito. A DFA does not make sense since we are only 38 days away from roster expansion on September 1st when teams can expand their rosters above the 25-man limit we have now. Expect Koda Glover to be optioned today.

The other complication is that many Nats’ fans are expecting some trade(s) which would also complicate the active roster as well as 40-man moves.

Giolito will face lefty Christian Friedrich of the Padres in the early afternoon game.

Here are the Nats stats against Friedrich:

A Stephen Drew walk-off hit as the Nats win a big game!: Postgame

Max Scherzer made one bad pitch in the 2nd inning that got pounded for a 2-run HR to put the Nats in a 2-0 deficit. It was all the Padres would get from Scherzer who really dominated during this outing. The Nats clawed back and tied the game in the 5th inning, and walked it off in the 9th inning after an Anthony Rendon single and a Stephen Drew triple that scored Rendon for a 3-2 Nats walk-off win.

stephen drew walkoff 7 23 16

Stephen Drew had not played in 6 days as he was hit hard by the flu that has been going around. He said he had lost between 6 to 8 pounds and still was not feeling great on Saturday. Great enough worked on this day.

Jonathan Papelbon earned the win after a scoreless 9th inning to keep the game tied 2-2, and Shawn Kelley pitched a scoreless 8th inning. Max Scherzer went 7 innings tonight with 10 strikeouts and no walks to keep his team in the game. Continue reading

Game #98 EJax for the Pads, Scherzer for the Nats: Game Thread

Edwin Jackson was claimed by the Padres and converted back to a starter as he took Drew Pomerantz place in the Padres rotation. Jackson beat the Giants last week and took a no-hitter late into the game before he gave it up.

For the Nationals, Max Scherzer will have to pitch well for the Nationals tonight after we have seen too many sub-par performances this week.

Lucas Giolito was named the starter for tomorrow and that move will require a corresponding move as Giolito must take someone’s spot on the active roster. Continue reading

Roark struggles as the Nats lose 5-3: Postgame

For those who don’t know, the Padres starting pitching, Luis Perdomo, is a rookie who entered the game with an ERA just under 8.00.

The postgame news conference got off to a rocky start when Bill Ladson asked Dusty Baker, “Was Perdomo that good, or were the Nationals that bad?” Continue reading

Game #97 Roark back in a familiar role: Game Thread

The stopper role has been a familiar spot for Tanner Roark who is now tied with Stephen Strasburg in team efficiency in their last 10 appearances where the team’s record in Roark’s last 10 appearances is 9-1 since his start on May 30th.

In that 9-1 run with Roark, he has been the stopper after a loss 5 times in that stretch. The Nationals will look to Roark tonight to once again be the stopper.

The Padres have scheduled right-hander Luis Perdomo to face the Nats tonight. Perdomo has given up only 3 earned runs or fewer in 6 starts this season, but he has been inconsistent which has led to his 7.36 ERA and a 3-4 record. Padres manager Andy Green’s decision for Perdomo is to rely more on his sinker, and his 60% groundball ball-in-play results over the past 30 days which is the best rate in the National League. The Nationals lose and with it goes Strasburg’s win streak: Postgame

Stephen Strasburg gave up 6 earned runs in a tough outing where he was victimized by 2 home runs from Justin Turner. Strasburg’s W/L record moves to 13-1, and he must start a new winning streak now.

The Nats were flat most of the day on offense when runners were in scoring position as the Nats were 1-13 today, and had multiple chances that included a bases loaded 2-out situation with Anthony Rendon at-bat. It was not a good day by many batters today in clutch spots. Continue reading

Game #96 Strasburg does the nooner at Nats Park!: Game Thread

The schedulers made this one a Noon start for the Dodgers ‘getaway day’ who only have to fly to St. Louis. For today, Julio Urias is called back up from the Minors to face Stephen Strasburg. The Dodgers already clinched the regular season series with the Nats; however, the Nats can claim this series with a win today.

In an interesting line-up move against the lefty Urias, Dusty Baker goes with Chris Heisey starting in centerfield for the Nats today and not Michael Taylor—-and then all of that changed when Jayson Werth was scratched as Taylor is now in CF and Heisey moved to LF. According to defensive metrics on FanGraphs, Revere is the Nats best defensive centerfielder by an UZR of +1.3, but due to Heisey’s limited action in centerfield he is only a cumulative +0.1 and the best UZR/150.
