Bryce Harper is the star tonight on offense, Scherzer throws a shutout: Postgame

Tonight’s game finished with win number 84 for the Washington Nationals as the 0-0 game turned to 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th on one swing by Bryce Harper where he pulled a three-run home run! All of this on a night when Trea Turner went 0-4.

Max Scherzer threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings as he left in a 0-0 game and labored through the latter innings as his pitch count grew over 100 pitches, and he finished with 117 pitches. Scherzer bettered his ERA down to 2.87 which is 4th best in the National League and 6th best in the Majors. Mark Melancon earned another save for his 40th of the season getting a quick 1-2-3 9th inning.

Bryce Harper, with his 3 RBIs tonight, has 80 RBIs on the season and with a hot finish could reach 100.

The Nationals are also at a season’s best 26 games over .500 (84-58) with just 20 games remaining in the regular season.

Game #142 Max Scherzer and the Nats take it to 20! Game Thread

Once this game is complete it, the Nationals will have just 20 games remaining in the regular season.
Max Scherzer continues his personal quest to once again etch his name onto the 20 game winner charts which he accomplished in his Cy Young season of 2013 when he went 21-3. Scherzer is currently 16-7 and should only get 3 starts after tonight in the regular season; however, the Nationals could have Scherzer make the last start of the season for 4 more starts. We will see as Scherzer will reach 200 innings tonight once he finishes the 3rd inning, and Scherzer has been leading the Majors in innings pitched most of the season.

The team is coming off of another exciting walk-off win, and
Dusty Baker is resting three of his regulars—Jayson Werth, Wilson Ramos, and Ryan Zimmerman. Continue reading

TVT carries this team with 2 bombs & the walk-off [5 Videos]: Postgame

The Nats won tonight 5-4 on a walk-off home run from Trea Turner. Turner hit 2 home runs on the night with 3 runs driven in. How does Trea Turner do it?

These aren’t wallscraper home runs—-these are bombs from a kid who is maybe 185 pounds (according to his baseball card). Remember, this isn’t a try-out (insert sarcasm). Trea Turner just won another game to carry these Nats with a two-run home run in the 7th inning, and the walk-off in the 9th inning.

With this win tonight, the Nationals just tied the win total of the 2015 season at 83 wins. Keep in mind, the Nationals have 21 games remaining to play in this regular season. Continue reading

Game #141 Back to business: Game Thread

The Nats looked a little flat last night, and there are certainly many reasons for that. Tonight the Nationals must get back to business as they hold an 8.0 game lead in the NL East with just these 22 games remaining in the regular season. The Nationals were on a nine game winning streak against the Phillies until last night. It is time to start a new winning streak tonight for the Nationals. Tanner Roark is looking to pitch better than his last time out.

The Phillies have Jake Thompson starting who the Nationals have faced before. Thompson comes into this game with a 6.48 ERA and has been an inconsistent pitcher for the Phillies this year.

One bad pitch and a lack of offense equals a loss: Postgame

To sum up the game is to look back at the 3rd inning when the Phillies scored 4 runs. With 2 outs and 2 strikes on Ryan Howard, A.J. Cole left a ball over the plate that Ryan Howard did not miss for a three-run home run to give the Phillies all the runs they needed.

The Nationals could not figure out rookie Alec Asher, and it was a combination of poor at-bats and bad luck and some very good defense by the Phillies. Two of the Nats five hits came off of the Nats bench as Brian Goodwin ripped a double into the gap, and Stephen Drew had a single in the 8th and later scored the Nats lone run in the 4-1 loss.

Game #140 A.J. Cole wants to make his case: Game Thread

The Nationals and their fan base await some positive Stephen Strasburg news, and in the meantime the end of the regular season moves forward. The Nationals are one game from matching their 2015 win total of 83 games. With 23 games left, the Nationals will be looking to see who steps up down the stretch here as everyone expects a few spots are up for grabs on the post-season roster like the ones Tyler Moore and Ryan Mattheus grabbed back in 2012. A Buffalo Walk-Off! Who says he needs rest? Now we go on Strasburg watch: Postgame

This is a bittersweet win. The Nationals pulled Stephen Strasburg after 42 pitches in the 3rd inning with an apparent arm issue.

The good news is the Nationals fought from behind to take the game to extra innings, and then came from behind in extra innings to win it on a Wilson Ramos game winning single in the 11th inning as the Nats win 5-4, and the Nats moved to a new season high of 25 games above .500 with an 82-57 record. Game #139 Stephen Strasburg is back!: Game Thread

Tonight, it is Stephen Strasburg back on the mound as he is activated off of the disable list. Strangely, Strasburg threw an abbreviated bullpen session yesterday which you normally do not do the day before you are supposed to start. We might find out later why Strasburg and Mike Maddux decided to throw that bullpen session. All eyes will be back on Stephen Strasburg today, and we will see how many innings Strasburg will be allowed to throw as he will be on a pitch count limit. Continue reading
