Game #8 Gio Gonzalez against the Cardinals; Dusty goes for 100!

The man in front of Dusty Baker on the all-time managerial wins leaderboard is Bruce Bochy at 22 wins ahead of Baker. With 66 more wins, Baker is assured of being in the Top 15 in managerial wins where every retired manager is in the Hall-of-Fame except for Gene Mauch. Some might say you need a World Series title to make it to the HOF as a manager, but Ralph Houk won 1,619 games as a manager and 2 World Series, and he still is not in the Hall of Fame. For retired managers in the Top 25 in career wins, only Leyland and Houk are not in the Hall of Fame as managers who have won at least one World Series, but expect Leyland will make it when he is eligible shortly for enshrinement.

Then you look at the managers behind Dusty Baker in wins who are in the Hall-of-Fame that never won a World Series like Al Lopez, Wilbert Robinson, Ned Hanlon, and Frank Selee. Continue reading →

Many people treat games as social outings to eat, drink, and enjoy the company of others. Ryan Zimmerman’s 3 run HR ties it in the 9th; #Nats bullpen then falters

Ryan Zimmerman was back to his 9th inning home run heroics taking a 3-0 deficit and tying the game on a 3-run bomb. Dusty Baker went to Koda Glover who struggled with his command and gave up the game winning single as the Phillies walked it off for a 4-3 win.

Stephen Strasburg was actually good in his 7 innings of work, but the defense wasn’t stellar at times behind him.

The Nats finish the series with a 3-3 record on the season.

Game #6 Series finale for #Nats in Philly; Roster moves today

The Washington Nationals can look forward to today’s game and put Saturday’s thumping behind them as that is yesterday’s news. Stephen Strasburg starts in the rubber game of this 3-game series in Philadelphia. The Nationals will announce their roster moves shortly.

If you are looking for some positive signs, Anthony Rendon had two hits yesterday, Jayson Werth is batting .368, and Daniel Murphy is batting .524 while having multiple hits in every game this season. Continue reading →

A painful game to watch; The worst 1st inning in #Nats history

The final score tonight in Philadelphia looked like a football score at 17-3 which would be 2 touchdowns plus a field goal equals 17 points and the other team got a field goal. Unfortunately, this was a baseball game and not only did Trea Turner leave the game in the first inning with hamstring tightness, the Nationals starter Jeremy Guthrie could not finish the first inning in which he gave up 10 earned runs. Guthrie’s ERA is 135.00, and there is a good possibility he will be DFA’d after the game.

The bullpen was totally burned tonight as the Nats relievers had to pitch 7 1/3 innings and Enny Romero, Joe Blanton, Oliver Perez, and Shawn Kelley had to pick up the mop-up duties and only Blanton stepped up to the challenge throwing 3 perfect innings.

The Nationals had some bright spots in the game besides Blanton as Daniel Murphy had a 3-hit night, and Jayson Werth and Anthony Rendon both tallied 2-hits each.

Jeremy Guthrie was guaranteed $1 million if he pitched for the Nationals, and you have to think he will be part of some post-game roster moves.

Trea Turner predictions for tonight!

For those who are into minuscule sample sizes, there are many who are concerned about Trea Turner and four games of progress. His BABIP will turn around as it is at .182 right now, and Trea is every bit of the .388 BABIP he was at last year. Yes, 7 strikeouts in 18 at-bats is poor, and no walks has not helped Trea Turner’s stats. But, it is only four games.
