Game #54 Scherzer looks to go Aces again in series finale in Philly: Game Thread

The Nats wrap up this 3 game series in Philadelphia as the Nats will try for the 3 game sweep before heading on the road for a weekend series in Cincinnati with a day-off tomorrow.

Tonight’s game at it’s finish will be the 1/3rd completion point of the season, and in just 27 more games, we will quickly reach the halfway point of the season. Sample sizes are becoming more meaningful for projection purposes, and the weather is getting warmer. The Nationals are 11 games over .500 going into this game.

Max Scherzer and Adam Morgan are their team’s respective starters for tonight which is also the start of the month of June on the calendar. Continue reading

Ranking the top pitchers in the MLB and 5 points about the Nats.

In Spring Training, CBS Sports released their ranking of the Top 30 MLB pitchers (here), and #1 was of course Clayton Kershaw and #2 was David Price and #3 was Jake Arrieta #4 was Zach Greinke and #5 was Max Scherzer. Stephen Strasburg made the list at #24. Ross made the list at #30 only it was Joe Ross‘ brother Tyson Ross.

There was no Tanner Roark on the list, no Gio Gonzalez on the list and no Joe Ross on the list.

Pitchers are now at that 1/3 completion point in the season where some stats become more meaningful and projectible. You can probably take games, innings, and multiple by 3. Most other stats will vary as there are some that are near record levels like the Kershaw WHIP. Kershaw would be on pace for almost 260 innings which is unheard of these days and that could change, and there are 5 pitchers just on this list that project to 21 to 27 wins.

Stephen Strasburg is on the next list and Strasburg projects to 27 wins also. Some years you might not see more than 2 pitchers winning over 20 games in a season. This is a rarity to see this many pitchers at 9 wins at this point in the season. Jake Arrieta’s record tying 23rd team win in games he started came to an end last night. Arrieta tied the MLB record previously held by Kris Medlen. Stephen Strasburg has the most team wins by an active player dating back to the 2015 season with 15 consecutive team wins he games he has started.

Joe Ross ranks 10th in the Major Leagues in ERA and 7th in the NL.

FIP Nats

What the 2016 Nats team has been built on is great pitching along with Daniel Murphy, Bryce Harper, and Wilson Ramos and others who are providing the bulk of the offense. You don’t win games where you can’t score runs. The Nationals rank 2nd among all MLB teams in pitching:
ERA TEAM 6 1 16

The Washington Nationals are 24-6 when they score 4 or more runs in a game. The Nationals are 20-3 when they score 5 or more runs in a game. That is the number the Nationals must get to on offense it would seem, and just circle that number. 5 starting pitchers, a 5 man bench, 5 runs to score a game, and who was involved in the first High-5 in sports history—–Dusty Baker!

Nats win on 4 HRs and there was a time in the bottom of the 8th it was a 2-1 game: Postgame

Joe Ross pitched a 7 inning, 2 hit gem, giving up only 1 run, and the Nats win 5-1. The game opened with a Jayson Werth home run in the 1st inning to open the scoring. The Phillies scored a run on a triple (Cesar Hernandez) against the shift making the score 1-1. Joe Ross got some great defense with Hernandez on 3rd base, Dusty had infield in and it paid off. A ball hit directly at Danny Espinosa cut down the runner going on contact as Wilson Ramos applied the tag. Aaron Nola dueled with Joe Ross in a great pitching battle. Continue reading

Game #53 Joe Ross working with momentum as Bryce Harper rests his knee: Game Thread

Roark pitched well in the Daniel Murphy show: Postgame

Last night was the Daniel Murphy show and everyone else was just part of his supporting cast unless you ask Murphy himself who deflects all praise to others.

Tanner Roark pitched well and kept the game close and earned the win in his 7 innings of work, but this game was all about Daniel ‘Hits’ Murphy who got 3 huge hits and 3 RBIs in key spots in the game and tallied the game-winning RBIs in the 8th inning. Jayson Werth got a key game tying RBI single and scored the game-winning run on the Murphy single with a great hustle play to beat the tag at home.

Déjà vu. Second chances, 8 days apart. Bases loaded. Jayson Werth comes in to pinch-hit

Yogi Berra said it best, “It’s déjà vu all over again”.

Dusty Baker did not hesitate 8 days later to put Jayson Werth into a similar spot he was in 8 days before. Bases loaded, pinch hitting, must drive the ball. Short memories can be a good thing in baseball, but very rarely are two situations exactly the same in baseball. The déjà vu was bases loaded with Jayson Werth entering 2 games as a pinch-hitter 8 days apart.

Nats finish the season series with the Cardinals with a 5-2 record: Postgame

Stephen Strasburg improved to 9-0 as this final game of the regular season series against the Cardinals wasn’t a laugher until Jayson Werth blasted a grand slam. The Nats improved to 5-2 against the Cardinals this year, and they won’t face each other in the regular season again until next year.

Dusty Baker was flawless in every in-game decision today as he saved Jayson Werth for a spot like he got in the 7th with bases loaded and 1 out to bring in his bearded righty.

Stephen Strasburg did what Aces do. Baker said, “Stras was good until he ran out of gas.” He became the stopper ending that 2 game losing skid and labored through 6 full innings while only giving up 1 run in a true quality start. Strasburg exited the game with the Nats up 3-1. Felipe Rivero came in once again for a Houdini act with bases loaded and 1 out in the 7th inning. Rivero retired the very hot Matt Adams on a sacrifice fly and then got the Randal Grichuk on a can of corn flyball for the final out of the 7th inning with the Nats clinging onto that 3-2 lead. Game #51 Stephen Strasburg again in the #1 role for the Nats: Game Thread

No rest for the weary as the Nats have the early scheduled start time at 1:35pm with Stephen Strasburg on the mound for the Nationals as the Nats need to stop this two game patch where the Nats starters have not performed to ‘ace’ standards.

Michael Wacha pitches for the Cardinals and has a 5.04 ERA and has not been good this season.

Today is the day that we had circled on the calendar as the first day Trea Turner could be called up and guarantee an extra year of team control. While Trea Turner is not getting called up today, it should not be much longer. Continue reading

Do you want the good news or the bad news? Good news Zim 4-4 2 HRs, Bad news Gio gets crushed: Postgame

The Nationals lost this game 9-4 and if we told you that Ryan Zimmerman was 4-4 with 2 home runs and Bryce Harper had a home run you would think the Nationals won this game. Unfortunately Gio Gonzalez gave up 6 runs in only 4 2/3 innings and the game got away early. The Nats did chip away and got within 2 runs until the Cardinals pulled away.
