Thoughts and Notes around the Washington Nationals as Opening Day is just 5 days away!

Open Day graphic by Steve Mears

The Washington Nationals 2023 season officially kicks off in five days. The Nationals are building from the ground up in what general manager Mike Rizzo has called a quick rebuild or a reboot. He has shipped away three stars from the 2019 World Series team and, by doing that, restocked his farm system. Enough of rehashing the past; the future has been teased before us in the form of top prospects, and the next few years should make most people happy. I compiled my thoughts surrounding the start of the Nationals season. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments, and Go, Nats!

MLB Pipeline joins Baseball America in ranking the Washington Nationals in the Top-10 farm systems!

Photo by Abbie Headington for TalkNats

Our general manager Mike Rizzo might say he doesn’t care about prospect rankings, but when things are good like a Top-10 ranking you take it. MLB Pipeline ranked the Nats’ farm system today at №10 to go with Baseball America’s №7 ranking. It is nice to hear and also to see the progress being made by the Nats of the future. Looking a few years into the future is like dreaming. Again, a year ago the Nats’ farm was ranked last in MLB. Today, it is in the upper-third of all farm systems thanks to the haul received back in the Juan Soto trade. There are enough team-controllable players and top prospects to fill every spot for the position players plus some backup bench spots in the year 2025, and that does not even include possibly the best Top-4 of college players in any draft in recent history in which the Nats pick second in July’s draft. Game #23 Nats and Yankees with Gore on the mound!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

This will be MacKenzie Gore‘s final tune-up in Grapefruit League play this year as the 11-9-2 Washington Nationals take on the Yankees in West Palm Beach. The good news is that manager Dave Martinez for the first time this year has his “every day” lineup with the return of Joey Meneses from the World Baseball Classic as well as penciling in his other eight starters for the same game. While Meneses is in left field today, that appears to be to give Corey Dickerson a DH game. Continue reading

Washington Nationals’ Roster Begins to Take Shape With Latest Round of Cuts

Photo by Andy Ward for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals continue to trim their roster as Opening Day is nine days away. Washington’s management has optioned OF Stone Garrett and Jose Ferrer to Triple-A Rochester. Both of them were considered strong possibilities for the roster just a month ago, but both underwhelmed in their numerous opportunities they had. These two players also had the advantage of being on the 40-man roster — but in the end, it did not matter. At the same time, INF Leonel Valera was sent to Minor League camp. None of the moves were shocking, but all three players could be called up to Washington during the season. Continue reading

NY Court of Appeals MASN vs. Nationals Archive

On February 14, 2022 the Orioles appealed the Nationals win in the MASN case over the disputed fees for the Nats TV rights, and on March 14, 2023 the case was heard by the NY Court of Appeals. Thirteen months later!!!  “Justice delayed is justice denied” clearly does not apply in New York state.

Here is the video of the hearing, it was a quick 30 minutes. Surprisingly watchable, the justices often interrupting the lawyers representing each team, asking pointed questions.

The hearing seemed to go well for the Nats.

Game #21 in a Verlander and Corbin matchup!

Photo by Andy Ward for TalkNats

For a Spring Training game it does not get better than Justin Verlander on the mound for the New York Mets. If we had vintage Patrick Corbin of 2019, we would call this a pitcher’s duel. Oh well, let’s see what Corbin does in this one as he might be named the Washington Nationals starting pitcher for Opening Day — and that is less than 10 days away! Continue reading
