Game #29 The Nats need a starter for tomorrow!

The Washington Nationals had a tough first inning and went flat on their way to a loss last night. Cory Abbott was promoted yesterday from Triple-A and the presumptive starter for tomorrow…until he pitched 2.0 innings last night. That took him out of the running to start tomorrow’s game unless he did some sort of “opener” thing which makes little sense. The candidates seem to be Joan Adon, Paolo Espino, and Jake Irvin for tomorrow’s start. But if Adon starts tonight as scheduled for Rochester, he will clearly not be the pick to pitch tomorrow night’s game in Nationals Park. Espino has the experience over Irvin, so we will see how this shakes out.

Game #28 Nats face a Cubs team with lots of new faces!

The Washington Nationals begin a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs. The team from Wrigley brings a lot new faces to the team, and the Nats are familiar with them all. Cody Bellinger from the Dodgers and some classic postseason matchups, Dansby Swanson from years with the Braves, and Trey Mancini who was a fixture in some many Battle of the Beltways games. And of course Yan Gomes, former Nats’ World Series hero, is on this Cubs’ team. Lefty Drew Smyly starts for the Cubs, and the Nats know him from stints with both the Phillies and the Braves.

Series Preview: Nationals vs Cubs

The Nationals continue to play host to the N.L. Central as they prepare to face off with the Cubs for a four-game series. Washington has had an inconsistent two weeks, posting a 5-5 record which is the good news that they finished at .500. But they had a chance to make more progress as they had won two consecutive series before this past weekend, when the Nationals dropped two of three to the Pirates but managed to avoid a sweep and defeated the Pirates 7-2 on Sunday. After the four-game set, the Nationals will head west to begin a six-game road trip against the Diamondbacks and Giants.
