Game #48 A rubber game to win!

The Washington Nationals have a series to win today to at least get things right before their day-off tomorrow. They have their own Minnesotan on the mound this afternoon in Jake Irvin who was born in Minnesota and first drafted by the Twins in 2015. Irvin turned down the Twins then and headed to college, and he hopes to turn down the Twins today.

On injury updates, Zach Brzykcy has was assigned to the FCL Nationals and pitched an inning today with two strikeouts. He is working himself back from TJ surgery. A very promising bullpen arm who is on the 40-man roster (not on the 60-day IL). H/T to Stever20 on that one.

After Patrick Corbin‘s latest start, his spot in the rotation should certainly be in jeopardy. He might make until Cade Cavalli or Josiah Gray are ready to return. Here’s what we think the schedule could look like going forward:

  1. Wednesday: Jake Irvin vs. Twins
  2. Thursday: Day-off May 23
  3. Friday: MacKenzie Gore vs. Mariners
  4. Saturday: Trevor Williams vs. Mariners
  5. Sunday: Mitchell Parker vs. Mariners
  6. Monday: Patrick Corbin vs. Atlanta
  7. Tuesday: Irvin vs. Atlanta
  8. Wednesday: Gore vs. Atlanta
  9. Thursday: Williams vs. Atlanta
  10. Friday: Parker vs. Cleveland
  11. Saturday June 1: Corbin vs. Cleveland
  12. Sunday: Irvin vs. Cleveland
  13. Monday: Gore vs. Mets
  14. Tuesday: Williams vs. Mets
  15. Wednesday: Parker vs. Mets

Your top Washington Nationals on the FanGraphs’ WAR leaderboard has Trevor Williams at +1.3 WAR followed by CJ Abrams and Jake Irvin at +1.1 and MacKenzie Gore at a +1.0 and Jacob Young at +0.9. In total, 20 Nats’ players are in positive WAR and another five at a neutral 0.0 WAR. Eddie Rosario moved back to negative WAR. The issue at the moment is about the four players at the bottom in negative numbers.

“Sometimes those days just happen. [Corbin] has been really good, and really keeping us in games. Today, it just didn’t happen.”

— manager Dave Martinez said yesterday

The Nats starting pitchers have a combined ERA of 4.25 and 17th in MLB. The Nats are now 23 points from 15th best in baseball. The team has been slowly moving up in the rankings it seems week by week.
