Game #144 A 4-gamer in Pittsburgh

The Washington Nationals are just 2.0 games behind the Pirates in the NL standings, and the teams have a long 4-game series that will probably determine where they finish in relation to each other. Both are almost guaranteed losing seasons unless a baseball miracle happens.

Once again, the Nats got a horrific starter from former Pirates’ pitcher Trevor Williams. What is clearer than ever is that the Nats need legitimate offseason moves to add starting pitchers to this future rotation. Tonight, it is Patrick Corbin for another start and more hope that he can pitch well.

“The long games, the extra innings … this weekend was a grind. … I saw some really good things.

— manager Dave Martinez said

The Nats starting pitchers have a combined ERA of 4.89 for 24th best in MLB.

Here is how they rank:

No. 6 Starter: Joan Adon 5.59 (starter’s ERA only)
No. 5 Starter: Trevor Williams 5.44
No. 4 Starter: Patrick Corbin 5.23
No. 3 Starter: MacKenzie Gore 4.42
No. 2 Starter: Jake Irvin 4.20
No. 1 Starter: Josiah Gray 4.13
